I was nowhere near that level then.It's not retarded, it's natural. But if you look at your past work and feel bad, it's because you can see things in it you would want to do different. You can actually use this gut-wrenching feeling to your advantage, by searching your work for what parts exactly you don't like and taking a guess at why.That's how I improve my drawing, and why I never delete anything.
