In this particular instance I don't think you can ignore the race issue. There's always been a sense in the black community that this stuff is being pushed on them by WASPs and Jews in order to weaken them. It may be that Disney walked it back because they realized were overplaying their hand.

They'll go on and on about how homophobia and strict gender roles are an artifact of colonialism, that accepting them won't be damaging to the race. What they never seem to get is that even if that were true, it matters a lot less than whether the whites pushing for gay rights are doing it in good faith. What kind of sense does it make that a race that has despised you for centuries would turn around and try to help the negro race's vulnerable sexual minorities out of the goodness of their hearts? And yes, forcing that one people without their understanding or consent can very much be an attack.
