My favorite pre baroque composer is William Byrd, I like Schutz too a lot. But I do not think the renaissance and pre baroque composers are as interesting as properly diatonic music. I read. A book on palestrina which I liked a lot and I find his music admirable and euphonious, but it still does not have the modulatory or formal (ie structural, not as in complexity of the way he writes) complexity you see in later composers. So I don’t blame normies for that, in a technical sense the modal music is significantly less “interesting” and more restrained. Even the experimental composers like gesualdo don’t really find an interesting structure emergent from that experimentation in my opinion
