let's say you lived in a monarchy and there was a mandatory parade for all citizens, and the king had just returned from a long trip away to China, where he, reportedly had acquired beautiful new silk robes that he was going to be wearing and showing off at the parade, and you were specifically instructed to comment loudly on how stylish and elegant his new robes are.

You go to the parade, and the king finally strides past, there are no robes to be seen. He is naked as the day he is born. Yet, everyone is cheering and complimenting his ornate garments - that do not exist. Would you feel weird? Would you feel weird being crowd-shamed into praising the non-existent king's new clothes?
