I got so unreasonably pissed off when I finished the longest chapter of the book, which was literally just an overlong restating of how the world worked, because Winston caps it all off by winking at the audience and saying "the best books tell you what you already know". I'm so glad Orwell died soon after writing this turd. Talk about contempt for the reader.

The most glaring contradiction is why Winston didn't just dissolve into the prole area and ditch his identity. It's entirely decentralized and anarchic, with little oversight. They had pubs, goombling, prostitutes and genuine freedom. It seems like the proles have it better in that regard, even though there's poverty.

Talked to the old boy at the bookshop today about it, as he's just reading it now. I said "yeah it's alright, pretty good for high schoolers because it beats you over the head with the message. Similar to The Great Gatsby in that regard". It's a very similar to those simplistic big baddie dystopian with plucky teenagers fighting against some meanie big bad system, like Divergence and the Hunger Games. The tier system with parties and it being autistically structured as a caste system leans into that. I read it for the first time in my 30s. It was a bit of a chore, not pleasant, and not realistic. It accurately described a few things such as power causing people to change their minds and believe insane things and confidently stating falsehoods and direct contradictions and so on. But besides that I didn't see anything really relevant to the modern world. It was definitely more about 20th century tyranny and didn't foresee the modern world, besides that bit mentioned before.
I guess what stuck with me the most was how "well adjusted" he was after he finally got broken. He behaved exactly like a perfectly well adjusted successful type of person who was underneath it a mere husk of a man.
