That book is supposed to teach arithmetic through logic rather than rote memorization, to give you a foundation of actual understanding. I'm not sure how it compares to the book by Boethius, but yeah for a classical education you want to avoid anything modern and Western, since the modern Western education system, ie the Prussian education system, is all about suppressing logic and understanding and giving you a hollowed out bullshit version of things, that's why you acquire a classical education, these two things are polar opposites; modern Western slop and a classical education.
