They did a great job putting the great parts in the movie and removing the retard weirdo shit (the huge vaginas plotline for example).
A great adaptation for their target audience and aim. They managed to capture Frollo and Quasimodo personalities. Esmeralda should have been far less of a virgin Mary archetype though.

The Giacomo book is a call to arms for Italian nationalists and Girabaldists in the 1860s to reject modernity while the Delon/ Lancaster movie is a nostalgic look at the now long gone aristocracy of Italian life of the preceding century rendering it no different from a Vienna operetta or White telephone movie.

Visconti is an elder god-tier director that doesn’t get enough credit in modern film buff spheres. His adaptations of Death in Venice and Senso are also masterpieces. The former being interesting because Visconti was also openly a fag, which explains how he knew that Bjorn Andersen would be the perfect cast pick for Tadzio.
