I'd like to be an intellectual. Does /lit/ have any "intellectual" hobbies outside of reading? I am currently pursuing a career in academia, I study Chinese, and I've recently taken up violin. I'd also like to learn how to play chess well, but I don't really allocate any time towards that.
>>
I sometimes paint landscapes from my window, I have a great view of fields and hills and while I don't have any formal training, it brings me peace and quiet
>>
Many intelectuals play an instrument

>I'd like to be an intellectual
why? intellectuals are vapid whores and also are terrible with money
>>
>>25301266
It's just the sort of identity I find most appealing. It fits me best.
>>
>>25301268
Is this supposed to be sarcasm?
>>
>>25301289
No, I'm fully genuine.

ragebait
>>
>>25301298
It's really not, although I confess I don't see how I could possibly back up that claim without your arguing that any claim I make to being genuine is itself sarcastic
>>
>>25301042
Yes, I "jork" my "peanusweanus" if you sniff my drift

Gardening is in fact one of the most intellectual hobbies. I'm talking about designing artistic gardens btw, not growing cabbage in a dirt rectangle.
>>
>>25301268
ok, how about the clouds by aristophanes
>>
>>25301594
It's a good idea. I know that it exists and I know Socrates is in it, but that's about all I know.

>being an intellectual is when smoking cigars, watching ballet, and wearing pocket squares
what is it with zoomers and their need to choose an identity and then form their behaviors around that identity? Your identity is emergent based on your behaviors and preferences; trying to become an identity is being performative.
>>
>>25302175
For me, at least, it's that the concept of an emergent identity feels anachronistic in a world designed to assimilate people into a singular mass of flesh. I don't think that you can just "go with the flow" and end up as anything other than another goyim laborer who dropped his sense of self in between instagram reels.
>>

If you’re using Instagram and scrolling reels that’s on you buddy. The zoom zoom mind cannot conceive of a life not mediated through pictures and videos posted by others.

Recently I've gotten into golf and I would say it's pretty intellectual with club selection and being mindful of your form and strategizing how to play the course and conditions. There are safe plays and risky plays and different swing techniques to achieve different shots. There's a lot going on under the hood that I didn't know about before starting to play. It's also cool that instead of a head to head competition it's just you vs. the environment and the winner is whoever plays their game the best. I feel like that allows you to be pretty creative about how you play.

Also if you're trying to "become an intellectual" by wearing a fedora and drinking martinis, rather than becoming [an intellectual], the only thing you are becoming is [man chasing a simulacrum of being an intellectual]. Intellectualism comes from within, it's not an aesthetic of having leather furniture and carrying a black umbrella. >>25301268
intellectualism is when eggs benedict, ritz-carlton, and vacation to times square (lol)
>>
>>25302301
God forbid I should have tastes.
>>
>>25302308
do those things if you like them, there's nothing inherently bad about martinis or tiramisu or eggs benny. but it seems like you're liking them because you're making the mistake of thinking "this is what an intellectual likes," rather than doing it for your own self-gratification. Do you actually enjoy watching ballet, or do you want to be thought of as the kind of sophisticated guy who goes to the ballet?
>>
>>25302334
No, these really are my tastes. I love the ballet. I admit that I pursue them somewhat intentionally, partially in an effort to define my identity, but that doesn't mean I don't actually enjoy doing all of those things. Also, that's not a tiramisu, it's a Gateaux Opera. I don't like tiramisu.

Gayest thread ever. Grown-ass man pursuing vibes to satisfy his audiences like a woman. Kill yourself.
