I don't really get it. He wrote some good comics, some decent books, but like, overall in the grand scheme of things he was very average even for the standards of genre fiction. Why (prior to his cancellation ) was this guy fucking everywhere? why did every other genre book have an introduction or blurb written by him?

Honestly Gaiman was a mid writer. His comics are some of his short fiction are worth reading, I'd also recomend good omens.Instead of reading Gaiman you should read all the great writers he was influenced by and largely failed to imitate.

I always find it funny that manga manage to pull off being serious far more often than western comics do despite taking themselves so much less seriously. Perhaps that is so exactly because they don't have this complex about wanting to prove that they are srs business and not just entertainment for children and manchildren?
He filled a niche. It's very similar to Harry Potter, in that sense. People who, rightfully, speak out against Rowling like to go on about how there's so much better literature for kids and teens to read than Harry Potter, but none of them quite hit the same spot. That particular style of comfy, slightly gothic urban fantasy for older kids and teens with relatable characters.Gaiman is similar. He goes for a slightly older audience but it's a similar blending of the gothic and the cozy. And if course that wonder of a world of magic existing right under our noses.Funnily enough, that niche is now mostly being filled by Asian stuff.
