>"Erm, fantasy and sci-fi shouldn't have grittier themes or complex human relationships, political conspiracies or a blurry line between good and evil, all stories should be le hecking inspiring and also dumbed down for kids and childish adults because... Because they just should, okay?!?!" Seriously don't get why that hack gets so much praise for this line of thinking. I don't even like media like Game of Thrones but there absolutely IS a place for it. Wanting all media to conform to a single standard is absolutely retarded and narrow minded
Okay now post what he actually said.
>>25305441>J.R.R. Tolkien famously disliked Frank Herbert's Dune "with some intensity". While he was historically polite about the work of contemporary authors, he explicitly noted that it is "impossible for an author still writing to be fair to another author working along the same lines".Tolkien did not elaborate publicly on the exact reasons behind his distaste, but scholars and literary critics generally attribute his reaction to three fundamental philosophical differences:>Moral framework: Tolkien’s work relied on strict concepts of objective good and evil, whereas Dune operates in a heavily cynical, morally grey universe where characters constantly choose the "lesser of two evils".>The Nature of Power: Dune presents a deeply cynical look at how mythology, religion, and messianic figures are engineered to manipulate the masses. This inherently conflicts with Tolkien’s focus on faith, hope, and traditional heroic ideals.>Allegory vs. Myth: While Dune utilizes complex political and ecological themes to comment on real-world issues, Tolkien notoriously despised overt allegory, preferring his works to be sweeping mythologies. Not really a quote, and taken from the AI from Google, but it's accurate enough for you to get the idea. It is, like i said, absolutely retarded and narrow mindedSure, these aren't explicitly confirmed but what other reason could there be? It's practically the same reason why his fans hate GoT. It's just stupid. If people shouldn't watch grittier media then horror media shouldn't exist either
>>25305436Considering the fact that he was planning on writing a sequel that dealt with wayward Gondorians falling to a seductive cult devoted to Morgoth, I doubt Tolkien's mindset was as simplistic as you imply. Have you read The Lord of the Rings, OP? What did you think of it?
>>25305452Admittedly i haven't, but i'm planning to. Yet keep in mind i am NOT disregarding or diminishing Tolkien as a writer in any way. I'm sure his books are absolutely amazing and inspiring but that's not the point i'm making, i just don't agree with the notion that all fantasy media should follow the same rulesIf he did change his mind on this later on, then that's great. I have more respect for open minded authors
>>25305457His characters are more complex than you might think. Aragorn, for example, isn't actually presented as someone who is perfectly good in every case. For one thing, he's destiny obsessed and this obsession causes others to suffer. I invite you to read the books and see more of this nuance for yourself.
Brownoids seething about Tolkien again lol
Boromir DenrthorMerry and PippinFrodoAll have a modernist complex psychological pallet
>>25305525I'm planning to, gotta see if my local store still has the LOTR trilogy. I do know obnoxious fans of a media tend to distort people's views on said specific media so i'm gonna check it out by myself before forming my opinion on them
>>25305436He didn't say that. C.S. Lewis did.
Surely these threads just qualify as spam now right. We get it OP some Tolkien tradcath larper annoyed you on discord or wherever do you really need to make it everyone's problem
>>25305537Not to mention that Aragorn has a monomania not unlike Ahab and leaves psychological scars to those around him.
Obviously not taking OP's severe mental illness seriously or directly replying to him in any way, but it is incredible how little credit Tolkien gets for his gray characters like Fëanor. He was even confronted about this in an interview once and posited Denethor as a counter-example. The funny thing is that Tolkien wasn't modeling his story on modern literature but on ancient literature, which naturally led him to retell the ancient story: light vs dark. But his Catholicism led him to very frequently touch on the subject of the fallen nature of man in spite of the clear-cut theme of good against evil. Tolkien haters are some of the most deranged individuals out there.
>>25305542That's great - you're right about the current crop of Tolkien fans often being strangely odious, but I'm glad that hasn't stopped you from judging him on his own merit.
>>25305441He posts this for authors constantly. Same format, sometimes the same words. I think honesty is an allergy for him.
GollumBoromirDenethorSarumanThat random easterling that the ranger suggested was probably innocennt or misguidedFucking Frodo falls to temptation and needs divine intervention to destroy the ringWhere the fuck did this "black and white" meme even come from
>>25305451So it's just a bunch of 'scholars' (Might aswell be redditors) that have created a fantasy in their minds around what his opinions on Dune must be. Brilliant.
>>25305679Frodo literally gets PTSD from his adventure. The critique of Tolkien doesn't make sense.
>>25305436>grittier themes Abusive relationships (Sarúman/Gríma), schizophrenia (Sméagol/Gollum), despair and suicide (Denethor)>complex human relationshipsDenethor/Boromir/Faramir, Húrin/Túrin/Nienor, Sméagol/Gollum>political conspiraciesGríma and Saruman's sabotage of Rohan, Gandalf's building up Aragorn, Sauron in Númenor>a blurry line between good and evilCorruption of the Ring, the whole story of the Children of Húrin
>>25305704Yeah i'm more annoyed at the midwits who perpetuate this than anything else desu
>>25305742Another anon has told me this on another board and yeah, you're right. I should have actually checked out Tolkien's other works instead of basing everything just around LOTR and The Hobbit. I take responsibility for my own biased retardation. I'm actually planning on getting into his works once i'm finished with the current book i'm reading, so i can form my own opinion about them instead of just going along with what fans/haters say
>>25305436did you actually read any of his works?
