this all started with cinema and its so called "media literacy" and subhuman husks that think this shit auto translates into lit need to be raped in death camps

Reddit's problem is they treat advice for children learning how to tell stories as some kind of writer's axiom. "Show don't tell" is just a pithy phrase to remind children, or I guess adults with really stunted educations, to try to be descriptive, it's not meant as an absolute law of "good writing". There's nothing wrong with summarizing in your writing. You just have to be aware of what you're doing, and that's really what "show don't tell" is about: making newbie writers actually think about how they're describing, or not describing, something happening.
>>25306256depressing when one remembers many of the top movie directors of all time treat it like a holy grail of narrative development
>>25306268It works for movies in most cases. Just a pity most directors shun voice overs.
>>25306134Homer>tells you everything
>>25306195>>25306256my brother used this phrase to recommend some shitty show to me about year ago like I'd never heard it before and I haven't bothered talking to him since. Of course, it's not surprising that someone who'll never leave his hometown and prefers to sit around and get drunk with midwits who never challenge him in life would get off spouting wikipedia/surface level knowledge to try to impress his retarded friends.

>>25306444>not wholesome, manyeah, look where we are dudebut sure, I'll attempt humility and think maybe I'm being too hard on him, but it doesn't really change the fact that it comes off as annoying and unnecessarily condescending
Don't forget to kill your darlings!
>>25306456The actual phrase is "kill your babies". That's how it was taught to me in school. I guess kids today are too wimpy for it.
>>25306268Film is a completely different medium than writing. In film, "showing vs telling" has a totally different meaning, and represents completely different crafts.
>>25306456Writers need to hear this from time to time because it's slightly unpleasant.
>>25306134Yeah, tell me about it. I have seen random commenters bring up this critique in some inappropriate context so many times over the years that I’ll just ignore anyone who even says it at this point.
