Recommend me some books on the subject (preferably non-fiction ones about their history and culture, but I'll take novels as well, if they're great).

Salomon Maimon’s autobiography is a great read, largely about his disillusionment with Judaism but even so. He was a rabbi who was led by Kaballah into secular philosophy. It is in public domain this is mid 18th century.
