When they say make a big deal of how much women "read", this is what they mean. Basically treating it like a colouring book with the occasional inane annotation thrown in. All so they can score attention points and pretend to be intellectual on TikTok or whatever.
>>
>>25307643
Seriously, why the fuck some people do this? The MOST i do is sign my name on my books, i can't imagine using the pages like some sort of diary. Is it a woman thing? At least i never seen a man doing it

His name isn't Ishmael, he is a fictionalized Hermann Melville. He says to call him Ishmael because Ishmael is outside the tribe

>Is it a woman thing?
Yes. Women tend to like expressing themselves more outwardly. They decorate, ornament, aestheticize, personalize. For them, an empty margin must be the book equivalent of this.
>>
>>25307877
Amazing how women just don't understand that a more simplistic lifestyle allows us to think more clearly. It's no wonder they're so emotional all the time

They're just a fundamentally different species. It's endearing when applied to the right thing and enriches your life in ways you would otherwise never care enough to. It's less endearing when you're purchasing a second hand book filled to the brim with the trite observations of a stranger.

It's not reading. If you're not able to assimilate the text's contents to your mind without stopping every 5 seconds to doodle and play with your assortment of colour pens then you're not mentally immersed in the act of reading.

>>
>>25308006
You can't just scan the page and recognize whatever it was made you bookmark it?

All my finished non-slop books have tons of little bookmarks (I tear up pieces of old magazines or similar) and I can always find whatever made me bookmark the page. If it sparks some other thought I always write it down elsewhere, it's rarely confined solely to the domain of whatever I'm reading anyway.
>>
>>25308006
Write it down in a notebook you retard

>You can't just scan the page and recognize whatever it was made you bookmark it?
I can, but I can also use a pen because it's my own book and you can't tell me what to do.

Annotating fiction is female brained retardation. But annotating nonfiction is what you're supposed to do.
>>
>>25308098
So were the others but you were afraid of mine.

Using a separate notebook is still superior in that case.

I didn't know what yours was because I wasn't involved in that comment chain in the first place, but now I see it.
I don't even annotate often, but when I do it allows me to quickly highlight sentences/words I like or that remind me of something. One time I wanted to do a detailed comparison between a book and a movie adaptation. Using a notebook only makes these things harder.

You say this as if it some kind of "own." Like wow can you believe what these morons wasted their time doing? And your picrel is
A laboriously crafted manuscript with beautiful calligraphy and illustrations with neat annotations made by scribes with an actual understanding of the material which they are annotating. Also all part of a tradition which kept alive countless works from the Ancient world onwards which we would not have today if it were not for monks copying them when the previous copies started to degrade? Every time you read a classical work you should be saying "thank you monks, thank you scribes."
>10% of GDP
Would that it had been 30% and we could have more lost texts today.

NTA, but recently I purchased a really nice Oxford printed hardback of the complete works of John Milton from the 1950s. It was in beautiful condition other than pencil annotations on almost every page, as a result it was a mere £3.50. I took it home, took a rubber to it (eraser for the yanks) and within an hour and 30 minutes it was annotation free and looked brand new. Score! Pencil annotations FTW (I don't annotate in my books at all, I record my notes and thoughts in a notebook).

Annotations are for study, when you need to tie what is written there to what you know from elsewhere but isn't written there and when you might need memory aids and directions for quick referencing, and for criticism, when you are going back to a read book to add your own thoughts and reasonings (actually) to individual segments of it. If you do it without a good purpose you're just interrupting yourself and cluttering the page, ironically making things more difficult and unclear for yourself.

>>

In chapter 16, Peleg says "your name was Ishmael right?" or something along those lines.
Ishmael, himself, never tells Peleg his name with dialogue. And he never tells the audience that he tells Peleg this with descriptive text.
We can just assume that Ishmael told him his name and didn't bother mentioning it. But with how descriptive and paranoid he is, that doesn't seem to follow. Maybe Peleg is the one who "came up" with the name and Ishmael just like it?
