>my favorite book of all time is Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett
What type of person do you imagine?

A witty, well adjusted, pleasant person.

I've never read a Terry Pratchett novel, but I imagine a Redditor.
>>
>>25309153
Not op but you should give them a try. I read the whole series during the lockdowns and they’re just silly fun. You do like to have fun right?
>>
>>25309164
if I want silly fun I can read lots of books, why this one in particular
>>
>>25309072
I read this one last year because it seems like Terry Pratchett is almost universally well-regarded. It was, and I say this without a shred of exaggeration, one of the worst things I have ever read. It was a good lesson in ignoring the opinions of normies and realizing that normies have shit taste

If I remember correctly Guards! Guards! is about a third of the way through the series and marks the introduction of a few new characters that are interesting trope inversions and who play heavily in subsequent entries in the series. I don’t want to spoil it and although I enjoyed reading them all in sequence they’re all fun, light reads that generally stand on their own.

>>25309267
I shan’t.
>>
>>25309072
pretty cool guy
>>
>>25309072
It's shit.
>Villain is a bad man for no real reason
>Naturally, the one female character is good and smart
>The dragon gets to live happily ever after even though it murdered a ton of innocent people
Pratchett's books were all mostly like this, and I don't see the appeal at all. The Color of Magic and Light Fantastic were great, then it turned to shit.

>>25309282
>trope inversion

It's strange to see someone filtered by such a mid comedic book for literal children but apparently that's the brainpower of 4chan for you.

Someone who stopped reading in his early 20s. Probably a pleasant guy, though.

The Color of Magic and Light Fantastic are great if you read Conan, Elric, and Fafhrd and Gray Mouser, which no young adult has in the past 30 years.
As I age, I develop some legitimate concerns with Sir Terry's writing, mostly being a bit too fedora at times (even though Small Gods is excellent), some of the books coming across as preachy, and the villains seeming incompetent because they must always be through conceptually defeated, unmasked, and deconstructed to the point they seem so self-destructing they were never dangerous at all. But at the end of the day, that's an attribute of overt thematic coherence (which is difficult to complain about in light of what real slop looks like), and trying to write a meaningful book after already having written 40 other books which you have also tried to make actually be about something, and carry a message.

That's because you wrote the first two books to be funny and the rest to be "racism bad!" allegories. except for jingo, which removed the allegory

you filtered yourself with your own comment kek. his books were incredibly reddit, and he probably raped girls too in gaiman's hot tub but got away with it

It's funny watching anons twist themselves into pretzels claiming that Discworld was anything but protoreddit.

Yes the color of magic is the only good one because its written in the style of different people. I like small gods a little bit but its still just whining about his childish understanding of history and the world like all the rest

Moist von Lipwig was him beginning to grow up and learn something about the world but whoops, too late, he was already 60 at that point

You know what else is proto-reddit? All of anglo literature. Making distinctions is just silly in this case.
>>
>>25310845
This isn't reddit you fucking tard, this is just British comedy that you can find in sitcoms like Faulty Towers, Are You Being Served? or Keeping Up Appearances.
The difference between reddit and that is that reddit goes over the top with the sarcasm and jokes to the point every single scene has to have a quip even if it's a sentimental scene. Not to mention reddit also relies heavily on pop culture and appearing smart.

Nightwatch.
It's the pratchett book I enjoyed and have reread the most.

It's peculiar since you can detect his longing for a past england.
Most of what came after it Is garbage I regret reading, especially monstrous regiment and unseen academicals, I desire to remove them from my memory

The Night Watch series of the Discworld books are some of the funniest of the lot, at least all the way up to Night Watch itself (his dementia started getting in the way of his writing right around Snuff).
>>25309282
What are you even talking about? Is this a bot post?
>>25310152
For a guy that writes "racism bad" into his books, he sure does make fun of multiculturalism a lot.

A very specific kind of old British nerd. Age 40+ but more likely to be closer to 60 now. Wears hats and have a beard. You have been into Games Workshop miniatures since the 80s and drink exclusively Hobgoblin or home-brewed mead. You also adore Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, 2000AD comics. You listen to exclusively Prog and NWOBHM.
