First couple of books were mediocre at best.
Then they were pretty banging if you like pulp fantasy bullshit.
Final two books in the series were pretty shit though.
Dresden himself is very much an annoying shitheel and since the books are first person from his perspective, you might feel like you are spending the evening with an insufferable cunt. If you get that vibe in the first book, drop the series because it never gets any better in that regard.

Codex Alera, on the other hand, is absolutely great from beginning to end.
