Is 25 too late to start reading?
>>25313643It's too late to start doing anything. Just give up.
>>25313643No. Don’t ask questions on such platforms and start developing your logic and treating your oversized amygdala and impaired neural connection between your brain’s limbic system and prefrontal cortex.
>>25313682Addictions lime caffuene alter prefrontal cirtex
>>25313643No. Read whatever you like, even if it's "objectively" bad. As long as you have fun, reading is always good for you.
>>25313643No, only late a few years if you were completely inactive. First, reading is an activity about wisdom not fluid intelligence. Second, most people read since they are teenagers, but understanding nothing of what they had read, they only begin making sense of it in their 20s which makes everyone feel like they have started too late. Most are really influenced by their few first reads when they were young that they could actually understand, so even then the best thing is that they developed the habit early but absorbed only a handful of books in their library. Reading is introspective without the raw material you simply cannot make sense of books.
It's over unc
Is the question supposed to be retarded? You pick up the book and read. Seeing as you wrote a coherent sentence, you must've developed basic literacy before 12, so the good news is it will always be possible to become a proficient reader. If you're worried about attention span problems, you start with just a couple of minutes and increase a little each day. Shouldn't take more than half a year or so to increase your tolerance/discipline to read at a level where it can become a main hobby. Or you get pills for your mental illness or adhd and suddenly realize reading has been super fucking easy for everyone else the whole time.
>>25313761Its not that. I just think I'm too far behind to even start. Kids in the 1800s were fluent in Latin and Greek and had read tons of classics. Whats even the point for someone like me
"reading?" and allow strangers to discharge into your brain, like i'm doing right now? you should start writing instead
>>25313764Kids in the 1800s couldn't even read. The few who could were wealthy and went through a classical education that emphasized grammar and rhetoric as skills that specifically gatekept the poors from taking "learned" jobs. So they learned Latin and read a bunch of classics, but generally became fetishists of certain literary styles completely discarded by 20th century authors.Reading isn't a competitive sport. You can read literature without needing to understand every reference. Only certain books, like Ulysses, require some level of familiarity with form and style. Simply by reading and slowly working your way through, you'll come to understand different periods and authorial styles and statements. Books after the postmodern have made focused efforts on disconnecting from paying explicit respects to classics and religion, which makes most books from the 20th century even more accessible. It's far more important to find the genres and styles you like as a new reader than to worry about understanding everything.
>>25313780But I want to b smart. But its too late to ever be
>>25313761>Seeing as you wrote a coherent sentence, you must've developed basic literacy before 12, so the good news is it will always be possible to become a proficient reader.Basically this. OP, don't listen to the demoralizers in this thread. Read whatever you want, but it can be useful to start with the canon
>>25313764Why are you comparing yourself to random kids from the 1800s? Who cares? If you want to pick up literature then jump into it and start reading, who gives a shit. You are in your 20s so you have another 40-50 years to read all the classics out there, you don't have to do it if you don't want to.>>25313784Anon there are many things that define or make someone appear as smart obvious things aside: critical thinking ability, habits, focus, good memory. All those things can be improved with enough practice and there's plenty of literature on those topics, just like you wouldn't become an elite athlete if you started now it doesn't mean that you can't start training for instance, you can always improve in some critical aspects of your life and the same applies to reading. The best time to start anything was yesterday, the second best time is now.
>>25313780This is the best answer you're going to get on this board OP.
25? I'd probably start digging a hole in the ground and lay in it until you die. Too late to do anything else.
>>25313792>who caresI do. Can't help it.>you wouldn't be an elite athlete if you started nowYeah twist the knife, why don't you?I just don't know what to do or who I am. Its all so hopeless. I'll never be a smart person. I wish I could have been taught on the classics. I'll never be worth anything to be honest.
>>25313797ive honestly felt this way since i was 20. i just never found any reason to live after you turn 20.
>>25313658>>25313797This is the cprrect answer. It was never meant to happen OP.
>>25313800Im 19 and feeling like this already constantly, specially when met with other people who have used their time better than me. My writing is incredibly amateurish and gross to look at. I have accepted im gonna work a mediocre desk job and that my poetry is at most something I share to whores to make me feel good about myself. It makes me wanna bash my head against the wall until it bleeds every day I failed my delusions of grandeur already. I read a lot fo the classics without much care but im definitly not educated in greek and latin or can write a great novel at age 17-19 like the romantics (whom I read non stop) could
>>25313643>me on the far right, per usual
>>25313821>mediocre desk jobI don't think you realize how hard that is to haveI'm 34 and nothing i did to improve my life or my self had any affect. I was 100% correct with feeling like my life was over at 20 and wanting to die on a high note. It's funny all the people who tried to talk me out of this idea. It would be a tragedy at 20 but after 15 more years of suffering and becoming some old ugly man nobody would give a fuck. It would be expected. It's a joke
>>25313798>I doOf course you do but I mean why are you comparing yourself to some arbitrary specific group of people from the past? They did they own thing and you do your own thing.>Yeah twist the knifeI'm an ESL but if I got it right it wasn't absolutely my intention to attack you in any capacity (and from my perspective I didn't, correct me if I'm wrong) so in that case I'm sorry. You bring up catching up with something but it's not the point even, if you care about reading and you are interested in it then just start reading instead of ruminating over the fact whether you will become smarter or reach the level of elite school students or whatever because it's irrelevant, even you are consistent with you will improve at whatever it is that you want to improve in, what more do you need. The athlete thing was just an example to say that you should also have realistic expectations, you can be an 80 year old and decide to pick up skating that you never practiced in your entire life so don't expect to win major tournaments is all I'm saying (doesn't mean you can't, but it's just not likely).>I just don't know what to do or who I amNobody can answer that unfortunataly and books also might not have the answers that you seek, but you should definitely try.>Its all so hopeless.I don't know you but spending less time online and doing fulfilling activies goes a long way in helping with that. Unfortunately you need to come up with a cope for that, there's no way around it.>I'll never be a smart personAs I explained it's easier than you think and all the defining traits of how a smart person appears are perfectly trainable even as an adult.>I wish I could have been taught on the classics.Nothing stops you from going to your local library right now, the web is full of lectures and commentary where people dissect those works in great detail.>I'll never be worth anything to be honest. This is a self-fulfilling prophecy, I would suggest therapy if nothing helps.
>>25313643Yes, don't even try.
>>25313834>just go to your library right now!nta but come on, that's such a disingenuous response. nothing makes up for a true classical education.
>>25313839>nothing makes up for a true classical education. And where did I said that it's a replacement of some kind?Between whining about never being able to become smarter and wishing you had some specific education on an anonymous forum to online strangers and actually going to a library I would take the second option any day, but this is just my opinion. So where is the disingenuous part?
>>25313849stop trying to bait some ridiculous argument.im done. so sick of your flavor of online discourse. you know exactly what you wrote, im not going to explain your own posts to you. chalk it up to an esl misunderstanding then.
>>25313848>Just fix 25 years of no education! What is better? 25 years of no education or 26 years with 1 year of education? Which options brings you closer to what you actually want and which option doesn't move you an inch from your current position?>all the physical exhaustion and depressionAnd I suggested what could potentially help. I don't know you, I'm not paid to do this and I'm not qualified to provide assistance, but there are places and people that can absolutely help you to try and address all those problems.>in your free time from manual laborWhy not? You have the time to post on 4chan in your free time from manual labor, surely you could dedicate some of that time to reading? Even if it's 5 minutes who cares?>Just go to the library broDon't go if you don't want to.>Oh shit wait they have nothing but video games and moviesThen go to another library.>My local library has no classical books at allPirate them, saying you are out of options is simply being dishonest.>Just stare at pdfs all dayYou don't have to stare at anything all day if you don't want to.>reading from a screen is agonizing and uncomfortable and I can't focus on the text at allDon't read from a screen then (I seriously doubt it to be the case because how could you shitpost on 4chan but again, you have options)>I'll be as smart as a 17 year old edwardianI didn't say it.>>25313854Wasn't trying to bait anyone.>you know exactly what you wroteYeah and I just don't see how something that I didn't say could be seen as disingenuous>im not going to explain your own posts to youYou don't have to, whatever.>chalk it up to an esl misunderstanding thenIf that's how you see it fine, I already apologized for any possibile misunderstandings anyway.
>>25313860Please for the love of God stop
>>25313863What?
>>25313865This is painful holy fuck. There's esl and then there's dense

>>25313872Why are you trolling them so hard?
>>25313874Never was my intention to troll anyone. Why did you even get that impression, I addressed all the points that were made. Was I necessarily right in anything that has been said? No
>>25313643Yes it's over
>>25313876Chest vee, good luck out there
>>25313643if you start with the greeks TODAY you might have a shot at making it.
>>25313643Me on the rightI haven’t read the thread yet but I hope someone else also posted the exact same 4 words
>>25314181I’m actually about to start in 12 days when my seasonal job ends. My goal is to be able to read the plays fluently by the time it starts back up after summer.
Are you people really this pathetic or are these types of threads and replies made in jest?I can't imagine unironically thinking your life is over at fucking 20 years of age. You people will be wallowing in self pity until your deaths instead of taking any sort of action and then wonder why you lead a miserable empty life, just making excuses for your pathetic existence instead of actually taking control of your life. You people will blame everyone but yourselves, when it's weekday you'll make excuses and say that you don't have time to read (Even though reading takes no time to do at all, you can read for only 30 minutes a day and still make progress, reading little is better than not reading at all.), and when the weekend comes you'll say that you're too tired from work like working the Frier at Macdonalds is some Herculean task and yet you'll effortlessly spend hours upon hours on 4chan posts, Social Media, Pornography and Video Games. It's your own fault that you can't read, not Mommy's and Daddy's for not giving you enough attention when you were a chid. You /r9k/fags disgust me from the bottom of my heart. Just fucking read you dumb cunt. Read. Just pick up a book and read, you are cleary literate enough to at least write a 4chan post.I am aware that these threads are mostly likely made by the Three Letter Agencies to keep young men down, dumb and submissive. But it saddens me that there are people who actually fall for these demoralization ploys.
>>25314214My grandmother tried to learn to read when she was 22 years old. Her boss was a teacher and put her on a special course for adults. Even so, my grandmother died without knowing how to draw her own name. She was born illiterate and died illiterate. And all because her learning window had already closed.Based on this empirical experience, I affirm that nothing complex is learned after the age of 18. Music, singing, drawing, painting, programming, other languages and so on.
>>25314536>>25314214The GREAT Benjamin Franklin said that most people die at 25 and aren’t buried until 75 and he had a point. Everything fresh and new is gone and almost none are capable of true innovation.
>>25313643Maybe stop being a faggot?
>>25314536I learned multiple instruments after age 25But I am high IQ so maybe that is required
>>25314214It's mostly due to being terminally online and convincing yourself, through pepe the toad infographics and charts, that it's truly ever and there's no point in trying because you will never achieve X, Y and become Z. There's a reason why it only attracts young people because they are the most vulnerable cohort to this type of thinking.I don't think glowies have to do anything because people are just doing it to themselves, nobody holds you at gunpoint and forces you to cry on the internet about how the world has failed you. Once you end up in a state like this it's only natural that you would want to drag others with you.The weirdest thing to me is the visceral reaction to any sort of advice, it's like talking to a brick wall really.
>>25314536Many people learn new languages and programming at an advanced age. Music is a different story though
Depends what you want to get out of it but yeah tis probably over bro.
>>25314214I just don't see any way to advance my life or enrich myself.
>>25314214What sort of action can be taken>makes baseless assumptions of what i do in my free timeAnd its 100% my parents fault in my case
>>25314214life really did end at 20, am i supposed to lie?
>>25315479>>25315480>>25315487The best place to start is to figure out what the biggest hurdles and obstacles you believe, whether true or exaggerated, you face. No one can do much if we dont define the problem(s) in the first place.
>>25315500I don't think there are any obstacles. I'm just badly-born I already read and have read all my life. Thats not really my issue. I'll be quiet now.
>>25315440It really is like talking to a fucking brick wall. Almost all of the replies to my post beside yours were from the exact sort of people i've described in it, and they didn't get the message at all. It's best to just abandon them, because that sort of person will do anything but change themelves. You faggots would rather die at the age of 60, living in squalor and misery than admitting your own faults and changing your ways while still young. But i'll mostly get the same replies, because i'm aware that all of you prefer wallowing in self pity and attention you get from fellow failures. Unless you are literally retarded or suffer some learning disability there is zero reason why you can't become an avid reader at 25 (which was the main premise of this thread). I'm not sure how you all even come up with these psychoses, that unless you had the perfect childhood, found the love of your life in High School and already have a house at the age of 18 you are an failure and can never become an intellectual. Before people used to get crisis about their age at their middle age, now they're getting it at 20. Is Gen Z really so infantilized that you believe that it's all over before you even get a Bachelor's Degree? The Internet has done irreparable damage to your minds.
>>2531572520 is middle age lil bro, 30 year olds are elderly
>>25315725I dunno. It'd be nice if you directly responded to the replies so I can understand what I'm even doing wrong. Like I said I already read.
>>25315725I think you're missing that its retrospective. I'm 30 recognizing that it ended at 20.
>>25313643Kill yourself retard the world is better without you
>>25315901Take control of your life. It doesn't matter if it's just lashing out, at least do something that isn't moping about feeling sorry about yourself. I don't know you personally so i can only give you broad advice. But i will repeat myself again. Take action, stop being a coward. It may seem simplistic but it really is that simple.Things won't simply fall into your lap while you are masturbating to futa sissy hypno vore hentai and eating Cheetos.>>25315908What is your argument for your life being over that soon? All you faggots do is mope about yourselves without arguing against me. Provide me arguments that aren't Doomer posts on 4chan, made by 18 year old kids who think life is over because Stacy doesn't love them, and they aren't 150 IQ Renaissance Men by the time they reach the age of 12.I'll honestly stop responding after this post because i'm still unsure if you fuckers are really such pathetic subhumans or if i'm being baited by retards.I suffered and still do suffer from Severe Depression and even at my lowest i wasn't this much of a useless waste of life.I'm very well aware that life in the Modern Age is disgusting and all seems hopeless, but do you think staying the way that you currently are will solve anything? You are playing into your Enemies hands. At least be brave enough to kill yourself if you are that much of a Sissy Nihilist, but you can't even do that.Gen Z and Millenials are Doomed. No wonder Boomers and Gen X are taking advantage of us at every opportunity if my peers are this cowardly.
>>25315725>Gen Z really so infantilized that you believe that it's all over before you even get a Bachelor's DegreeTo be fair, social media and access to untold volumes of observing snippets of people's daily lives and tiny complaints can skew things. But I get the sentiment. But its the internet. Theres only so much anyone can realistically do. So alot of it is just venting.
