the audiobooks read by James Marsters are kino. Jim Butcher is a shitty writer but the world he created and the situations are great. every book is better than the last one, and the world evolves with each book. it's simply just fun.

also the most magical thing about them is that there are no non white characters, even if this takes place in Chicago.
>>
>>25314609
i stand corrected. there is a russian black guy who shows up with a magical sword from god to fight demons, a mexican woman that turns into a vampire, and a native american wizard named 'Injun Joe"

Okay. Imagine if a 16 year old redditor imagined the coolest guy he could think of. Now imagine a decades long series with that guy as the main character.

I read like, 5-6 of them, and Harry pissed me off in every single one of them.

>Are they worth reading?
I thought they were fun. I've yet to find another urban fantasy that scratches the same itch.

i made up my mind to ignore these things the moment i found out this was about some lanklet with a fedora. i eventually caved and read some of it and found out it's slop made by someone who watched the maltese falcon on his phone once

clearly you didn't pay attention, because I don't think he puts on a hat even once in any of the 18 books.
The publisher decided on that cover without his permission and by the time he had enough pull to change it, it had become a running joke by fans.

yeah well it fits him to a tee

I’ve read up to book 16. Half the time I read just to shut my brain off. Long winding series are good for that. It’s good if you like fantasy in a modern setting it’s good. I also like Monster Hunters International.
>>
>>25315028
it is exactly that, it's easy to shut your brain off and the world he's got and the opportunities he makes for scenes are not wasted.

Necromancy being drums is fucking funny
>>

I didn't say I hated it, I said Harry pissed me off. I was in a Urban Fantasy time of my life.
>>
>>25315028
Monster Hunters International is much better.

Thinking about trying my hand at writing a stroy that be a drop in the sea of urban fantasy slop. Any recommendations or tips? Also your favorite books.

Is there such a thing as suburban fantasy?
I never lived in a city.
>>

A coworker recced them so I read the first couple and god damn it’s ass. I’m not even against urban fantasy or noir the writing is just bad in two genres.
>>
>>25313661
He doesn’t become much of a writer until he’s a few books deep. The first few books aren’t awful. But it’s like cheap, safe, cliche private eye novel with a coat of fantasy paint. I totally understand the people that read one or two books and drop it. Butcher gradually becomes a better writer over time, and it’s a very long series so once I was 5 books in I switched from nice audiobook background noise to something I couldn’t wait to sit down read more of

I read through book 6 and stopped. despite wanting to like these books I couldn't continue. If I started the series as a teenager I would probably like them more, but from the very beginning Butcher feels a computer geek that wanted to write noir but watched too much anime.

even after five books Dresden still acts like a teenager with a chip on his shoulder, always picking fights for no reason. He's also constantly doing dumb shit or allowing dumb things to happen. In blood rites after a chick tries to shoot him he puts his bare hands on the pistol and carries it around for all to see; later, he turns his back on a woman carrying a truncheon who then clocks him over the head - for the fifth time in the series.

By that point he was in his thirties and had at least six books' worth of experience. He's such a stupid jackass.
