Everything else is superfluous if you're reading for pleasure unless you're really struggling.For non-fiction, highlight key terms, names, main ideas, or interesting information. If your memory sucks ass like mine it really helps with retention because it forces you to slow down and think. Even with my memory, I had someone ask about a book I finished over 6 months ago and I could almost instantaneous lsremember the text verbatim and the location of the information. Also, if you don't spend a lot on a book you'll be more inclinded to highlight and notate. You won't feel guilty for defacing it if you only spent $5-$7 on it.
