Out of all the books for 40k, why is this one considered to be one of the best ones?

>>25314838Its written by Aaron Demski Boweden, who is often considered one of the 2 best writers who have worked in 40K. Even if your rankings are different he's one of the best, some people's favourite. It tells a more complete and well paced story than most stand alone novels will manage, not having to rush anything, but is still just 3 books so its not that big a commitment and doesn't risk overstaying its welcome. It encapsulates a lot about the setting with the vivid themes and illustrations of degradation and decay, degeneration from a distant past that was epic and grand but sick with the seeds of what it would become. It covers a lot of ground between 40K era and heresy era stuff.As much as anything its a very good 40K series with few caveats. There are Horus Heresy books that are comparably good, but they have the caveat of being part of the very uneven Horus Heresy series, demanding a higher level of general lore knowledge. Gaunts Ghosts is really good, but people are reluctant to start like a 15 book series. Ciaphas Cain has a great reputation, but isn't really representative of what a 40K book is generally supposed to be with the light comedic tone.There are other common picks for best books for no readers, that are some of the best books in general, like the Eisenhorn Trilogy or Helsreach(also by Bowden). Personally though Night Lords benefits from being much longer and telling a more elaborate story than Helsreach, while being somewhat more consistent in tone and focus and quality than Eisenhorn. And Eisenhorn has the loose ends of not really being 100 percent "done" after the main trilogy. Night Lords is. You can never read any further 40K books and if you like it Night Lords still isn't a waste of time.

They like being strong and hurting people and that's it, and usually admit it(word for word in one case). A large part of Talos' arc is being the exception who is desperately trying to believe they have some kind of coherent ideology and high minded motivations and meaning behind what they're doing, finally being confronted with and admitting the fact that they don't, then kind of pushing through it anyway in a sort of warped will to power.Night Lords is a better portrayal of the kind of people who massacre whole villages than most because its willing to just accept that they're malignant vile animals with little depth.

And I get it, if they say anything definitive about the linchpin of the entire universe it’s bound to piss people off and start to introduce problems. They need to sell those plastic toys.
