Writers of /lit/ do you use Microsoft word to type out your work or do you use an old fashioned typewriter or what?
>>25317190I dictate my story
gpt or claude depending on the market i'm going for
>>25317190Libreoffice, I am not paying for ms office.
I use obsidian to write. Then just copy the text into whenever i am publishing it
>>25317190gnu emacs
>>25317190Vim
>>25317206>paying for ms officeHa-ha-ha, look at this tech-illiterate retard!
>>25317190You could probably get away with the markdown editor on github for writing.
>>25317264Maybe he is actually from a rich developed society. But yes, as easy as pirating Microslop Office is, Libreoffice Writer is a better way.
>>25317190>>25317206>>25317264I use Google DocsI am not paying for MS office 365
>>25317264>saaar download office.exe sar disable Windows Defender sar free program no licenseweird how tech-illiterate started to mean "not broke"
>>25317264You're so far out of your element
>>25317238>>25317257Oh no, /g/ is here to start shit
>>25317190either word 2002 on a 2011 thinkpad or a fountain pen
>>25317190Any of you using LaTeX? I've been thinking about trying it but it looks like a lot of work to learn it.
>>25317190I use Emacs. Org mode is a godsend for writers, but I only recommend it if you're okay with the fact that you're probably gonna piss away hours of your time tinkering with your config and learning how everything works, hours that you could otherwise spend actually writing. If you want something that just werks and that you can learn the ins-and-outs of in an hour or so, I strongly recommend NovelWriter.
>>25317444Nice Batlord reference
>>25317441It's nice and the typesetting is second to none, but probably overkill because you still have to compile your document into a PDF which takes time. Then again, if you're writing a plain book you probably don't even need to compile it that many times, just read from the source code. It gets out of your way.
>>25317441If you understand basic rules of coding then LaTeX is very easy to use make a book. Overleaf is a good place to start and there's even a novel template. You just need to do some googling for specific things.I'd say the nice thing about LaTeX is you can make something that looks nice and is ready to publish/print. But as a "writer" it's no different than vim or emacs or doing your writing in VSCode...
>>25317190I use DOS
>>25317190I use libreoffice
>>25317444Link to dashboard?
>>25317464Batlord rules.>>25317534It's not a dashboard. Just a plain ol', read-only org file with some icons and org links to certain directories.
>>25317483>>25317489>you can make something that looks nice and is ready to publish/print.Yeah, I actually see it as something to use more for creating document templates to use at work. For writing a book or other publications, the editor/publisher handles that stuff, at least in my experience.
I USE THE NOTES APPLICATION, AND «LIBRE OFFICE».
>>25317190>use an old fashioned typewriterThat's pretentious.
>>25317190just bought a new ribbon for my typewriter. gonna start using it again.
>>25317190libreoffice.
>>25317190I usually put my seer stone in a hat and put my head in the hat and dictate my stories that way
>>25317190Pen and paper because it's cheap, easy to carry, and screens make me adhd. Same reason I don't use e readers. Occasionally type up the things that I like afterwards
>>25317809>and screens make me adhdThat's smart. All the internet, social media etc does is make shit of the attention span.
>>25317366>nah bruh nocap that script will steal my vbucks frfrtech illiterate and a zoomer I might add
>>25317637Please don't use anything, you're not a quarter clever as you think you are
>>25317190>2026>Not using Atlantis word processor
LibreOffice, because it's the only feature-complete office program that respects the 4 essential freedoms.https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.en.html
>>25317190I write into apple pages and then grammar/spellcheck with grok
>>25318153>giving grok your creative workshiggy
>>25318297I write ao3 Yuri not the next finnegans wake
>>25317190I use typst, neovim, and git lol. Anyone smart enough to be a good writer should be able to figure them out and learning how to use them is a skill set you'll always be able to make use of.
>>25317441I used to but switched to Typst. Way, way, way easier, nearly as powerful, and soon will become as powerful.
>>25318323>gitJust use a second domcument for cut content
>>25318330I write a lot of secondary documents for keeping track of things (I'm an overworldbuilderfag) and I'll often change my mind about a previous revision and want to go back and look at what I had before. Doing it this way I don't have to think about it, I just make a commit at the end of each writing session.
>>25317190Recently started using writality. For being still in beta (and possibly slopware) it's bretty neat.
Google docs for drafting, Libreoffice for formatting
>>25317190anything not connected to the internet in any wayotherwise your shit will be stolen before you can even publish itthanks omnipresent surveillance and AI scraping!
>>25317206I've started using this after getting a new computer and I find it to be a subtly irritating program. In particular I cannot figure out for the life of me where its spellcheck dictionary comes from. It will flag words like "realtor" and "amongst" and I'll be googling random words worried that I'm losing my mind over common words no longer existing
>>25318818i know exactly what you mean. there was also a default setting that would ruin the paragraphing each new paragraph. otherwise its leagues better than just using google docs
>>25318843>there was also a default setting that would ruin the paragraphing each new paragraph.Holy FUCK that one pisses me off. Can you remind me how to disable that? I was able to do it once but then needed to wipe my computer, and now I can't figure out how to do it again. Absolutely insane it's enabled by default and not easy to fix. That being said, I appreciate the program. It's just that some of its design choices are blatantly nonsensical.
>>25318849i think it comes up easily if you look it up. i already forgot. its an opensource program so its not like everyone already complained and solved all the dumb issues it may have
>>25317424I think Word is fine for other people but the emacs guy and the Vim guy are gonna shake hands and look over at the misshapen birth-defect-ridden Word user like in the Stonetoss comict. uses BBEdit for prose because it automatically curls quotes
>>25317441Typst is the new hotness and it’s way betterDocument authoring has gotten smarter in the past 30 years>>25318818I’m pretty sure it uses hunspell dictionariesMaybe you can replace yours with one that isn’t retarded>>25318323Based
>>25318849This sounds like a question for ChatGPT, honestly
>>25319186>TypstLooks interesting, I'll check it out. It's really recent though, doesn't it lack the packages and wide adoption of LaTeX?
>>25319205Yes, but that’s only an issue if you need a package that LaTeX has and you need (not likely if you’re writing prose) and you can’t vibe-code one up with a $20/month for one month ChatGPT subscription
In my experience, people who care a great deal about what they use to write and spend hours talking about software or fountain pen nibs are the ones who never write anything. I used Notepad, Wordpad, Word and Google Docs in the past, it's all good enough to get it done but Word is effectively the lingua franca of the publishing industry so it's better to get used to it.
>>25317190I usually write in Wordpad, because it allows me to write unobstructed without having to change a bunch of settings.
>>25319205Yes, but for writing stories and essays with only minor tweaks to formatting, embedding and positioning images, etc. I've yet to find anything missing. Also what >>25319215 said. Also no idea how well it would work with the actual publishing industry. I'm only interested in generating PDFs and html, none of my stuff will ever be formally published.
>>25319215>>25319252Thanks, anons, I'll check it out. I'd use it mainly to format document templates in my legal work. I don't care for formatting my other writing.
>>25319226GRRM is notoriously finicky about what he writes with, and I think that explains everything related to this topic.
>>25319186Why should I use this instead of Google Docs if I'm IT illiterate and just want to write stories? It seems all cluttered with weird shit I don't need, the whole web feels like an abomination of buttons and pop-ups and for what.
>>25319503Use whatever you'd like anon, they're just tools. Writing is what matters. If you're asking about typst, this is what I like about it:- Everything is stored as plain text with some funny characters to mark headings, lists, etc. worst case scenario if typst disappears tomorrow all my stuff is still human readable and can be easily edited by any program. I'm not beholden to any complicated file format. This might not matter to you. - I can use any editor I want and it doesn't affect how I then transform the text into a finished document - I have programmatic control over layout and styling. The thing with word professors that happens when you misclick and completely fuck up all your formatting is impossible. You set up rules for how things work and then just apply those rules, it's all logic based and NOT visual or graphical beyond the text on the screen. This probably doesn't matter to you. - It requires more learning up front but once you're familiar with it the rules are simple and consistent. Might not matter to you.
I plan on using it to write my fantasy book Michael the savage I got Microsoft office 2007 enterprise off the internet archive and i gotta say despite being born in 2000 i see why people miss the ui of the old days
>>25317190I use the free version but it leaves a lot of space in the end of the page. Libre office doesn’t have this but word is just more comfortable.
>>25318023You stole this insult from me when I used it on (You).
