This book feels like it was written by a very smart 10 year old.
It is quite poorly written but well researched. Hail Mary on the other hand is well written and fun and well researched. The author learned from his mistakes, that should be celebrated.

>i love stories like this, they really make you think and use your brain>NOOOOOO STOP CRITICIZING MY FAVORITE BOOK, WHY ARE YOU BEING SO ANALYTICAL, JUST STOP TURN OFF YOUR BRAIN AND ENJOY THE RIDE
>>25318660Damn, another schizo? It's the fifth one i see today
>>25318582Just wish he would let go of the reddit quirk chungus dialogue. It's the only aspect of the book that genuinely puts me off
>So anyways, reddit, like i was saying, Rocky turned the heckin' gravity up to 1.5 G's>It's giving me a gosh-darned headache, and I also have some monumental diarrhea>It's all good though, because Rocky and I just did a fist bump and saved both our planets, MEGA epic win bacon>oh my science, time to give a snarky monologue about conservation of angular momentumthis guy should be ashamed that he writes like this. story and ideas were bretty good, making the protagonist a TV Tropes moderator was awful.
>>25318719This, so much this. The book had everything to be a 10/10 for me, why WHY does Weir have to ruin it with reddit tier dialogue?!
>>25318557i posted my short story on here some years back. some namefag said it's good but "reminded him of the little prince". not at all what i intended with my hard sci fi near future apocalyptic war story
>>25318725Yeah... Not everyone is born to be a book writer, unfortunately. My prose is genuinely awful. Like 3rd grade writing. Though i'm not so bad at writing dialogue. Honestly, seeing that i draw better than i write, i think i should focus on becoming a comic artist/writer. My art isn't anything special either, but hey, the creator of One Punch Man still managed to grow big despite drawing like a 9 years old on MS Paint, so i guess i shouldn't lose hope
>>25318730most people won't notice if you make AI write prose for you. especially if you edit it alot
>>25318732Nah... Call me a fag but i wouldn't feel good about doing that at all. Feels like cheating. I want to actually learn how to write descriptions decentlyI don't know, maybe i'll read some more classics and watch YouTube tutorials
this seems like the type of book meant for people who used to keep on calling elon musk "the next iron man"
Michael Crichton but Reddit.
>>25318719yeah he seems good with concepts and premises but not characters, a common problem with sci-fi these days, lit or gaming or movies
>>25318709>Just wish he would let go of the reddit quirk chungus dialogue. This
>>25319755It's baked in at this point. Have you ever read Asimov? His characters talking about doing anything human or less than "saving the galaxy" is always a groan. He made one of the characters try to talk about sex in one of the Foundation books and it was horrid. Like listening to Grandpa write baudy about other old women after being turned widower.
>>25319788he writes for all ages in mind, so he needs to have disney-adjacent dialogue so loads of 7 year olds who dream of being astronauts can also read his stuff
>>25319797I give him a pass because he was a scientist used to writing scientific papers and letters, and most "scientist" writers seem to have a problem with writing things outside of this 'objective analysis' realm, which i particularly don't care about. At least he didn't write his characters having a "well, THAT just happened" quirky marvel humor attitude.
>>25319797>He made one of the characters try to talk about sex in one of the Foundation books and it was horridI mean, when is a character talking about sex EVER not horrid? I wanted to claw my eyes out whenever George R. R. Martin did it in GoT. Sex isn't really something to talk about, you keep that shit in the bedroom. It's why only weird gooners consume smut books
>>25318659This was the moment I realized I had been duped into reading utter trash. Who had even convinced me? I can't believe I had made it this far. I felt shame. I finally put it down and felt angry. I am no snob but anyone who likes this book as some incredible bit of science fiction is an utter retard.

>>25320396oh no. I have been depicted as a redditor. how will i recover from this blow.
>>25318557>tell someone that Weir's books read like novel-length applied math practice questions, but with no point>they have an autistic chimp out
>>25320546>Someone tells me that Weir's books read like novel-length applied math practice questions, but with no point >I reply with "i don't really care, still think it's good">they have an autistic chimp outI see this happening way more lmao
