If Martin was the modern Tolkien, who is the modern Asimov?
>>

China Mieville
>>
>>25319925
my favorite webnovel author
>>

Probably that fucker who wrote The Martian. But really, writers like Asimov can't exist in today's publishing world. He wrote so much shit, he was incentivized to, as were all the sci-fi guys in the middle of the 20th century.

>Probably that fucker who wrote The Martian
You wash your fucking whore mouth
>>
>>25319964
There is a definite through-line from Asimov to Weir though
>>
>>25319943
The writers like Asimov and Clarke are probably starting off writing for fanfiction sites instead of getting their short stories published by magazines as it happened in the old days

Anyways, to answer the OP, i know a lot of users will disagree, but the modern Asimov is 100% Cixin Liu. They both started as short story writers, getting their works published in sci-fi magazines, and both write about interesting, out-of-the-box concepts. Hell, even their writing style is similar. And trust me, i'm a faggot for both authors so i know what i'm talking about when i say this
>>
>>25320020
Also, both authors had their Magnum Opus be absolutely squandered by the shitty adaptations of modern screenwriters. Sad, but hey, it's another parallel
>>
>>25319925
His prose is just awful. I can't read him. It's painful to my eyes.
>>
>>25320020
I hate them both and I agree with you.
>>
>>25320020
I am meh on them both, but I agree with you.
>>
>>25319925
Roger Williams would be, if he'd ever fucking write anything again.
>>
>>25320020
>Hell, even their writing style is similar.
How can you say this when they wrote in different languages?

Not that there's a ton of competition but Peter Watts is the only serious 'hard' scifi author on the market worth salt. Asimov is a product of technological and scientific optimism and fascination. Watt is a product of modernity where science and technology are misaligned insentively and something between banal destructive and dangerous.
>>
>>25320131
Yeah, my bad lol. I forgot Liu's works are translated. But from what i've heard, the original chinese versions are more technical with the details and descriptions, so it's not that far off from Asimov's writing style
>>
>>25320146
Huh, never heard of this guy. Gonna check his works out
>>
>>25320225
He has dogshit onions twitter opinions but I enjoyed Starfish and Blindsight.
>>
Tolkien completed his series
>>
>>25319925
>If
>>
>>25320253
No he didn’t. His son had to publish most of what was left and Tolkien never finished the Silmarillion or the sequel to LOTR.
>>
Peter Watts
Greg Egan
David Zindell

Blows my mind when normalfags place Martin on some form of "best fantasy author" pedestal.
>>
>>25320020
Cixin Liu is very open about Asimov being one of his primary influences, I don't think it counts when the author is intentionally emulating him.
>>
>>25319925
Andy Weir
>>
>>25320363
Dumb fuck. The Lord of the Rings was submitted as a complete manuscript.
A sequel was never promised, and Tolkien never submitted The Silmarillion either.
>>
>>25320377
Martin successfully worldbuilded to explain feudal systems where families function as micro-states to plebs. Whether the distance we can take that is comparable to Asimov's ideas is debatable (I don't think we can) and whether it's as well thought out as Tolkein is impossible because it's not a complete work.

Starfish series is incredible. Blindsight was a miss for me. Watts is a real gem of a writer.

Greg Egan is my favorite, but hes nothing like Asimov and thats a good thing
