What about him angers you so? I’ve watched a few of his videos, and ofc I take them with a grain of salt since the whole point is to market his editorial services and ”academy”. But generally I think the advice is solid? I mean for the purpose of learning generally good writing habits, not for making some avant garde masterpiece defying all formulaic approaches.
>>
You can write realistic women, or you can write interesting women, but you can't do both. I remember reading that retarded power fantasy by Virginia Woolf about the woman correcting the love poem a man wrote her using red ink without feeling anything other than annoyance at his errors and that is what I mean: obviously not realistic but she had to sacrifice realism to make the character interesting

This. It's the reason why the only women i feel legitimate romantic attraction towards are fictional ones. Real women are boring as hell

When I write female main character she always gets brutally raped. Idk, it just happens.
>>

Gotta be realistic when writing women right? kek
>>
What's worked for me is writing very realistic women and then writing a single woman who does not behave nor like those other women, a sort of Florence Nightingale figure. This allows the average female reader a wide spread of horrible individuals to identify with while everyone else can enjoy the actually-sane one. This works especially well because such a female character is often sniffed out as "weird" or "bad" by actual women, so when the less-likable female characters do so it makes those real world female readers feel even better.
>>
Got some really negative reactions to all the female characters i've written from female readers. I just stopped writing female characters in general. way easier.

nice to see that I'm not the only one who struggles with this stuff

Seen his recent "don't worldbuild" video and thought it was retarded.

>you shouldn't world build you should world break
<don't you need to have a world to break first
>just establish it in a sentence or two then break it
<that's not how anything works
>But what about this movie
<you mean the movie that spend a half hour establishing it's world before "breaking" it
<Don't you really mean you need a inciting incident and conflict to create forward momentum in a story
>*shrugs* you should buy my course to find out

Dude is just a shill who puts out derivative videos to advertise bullshit.

my sweeping epic narrative involves the protag fucking a woman in her pussyhole. tell me, how can I avoid pissing women off? or is the sort of thing they like? (its important for the plot like how Conan just has to fuck sometimes).
>>
there is a channel on the tube about a bistro where a dude plays every role including the female waitresses and it's obvious he knows the female nature to a tee

then there is a similar channel about poker where the guy tries to replicate it but it's obvious he is reddit
>>
>>25322256
>tell me, how can I avoid pissing women off?
You don't.
If your work gets any traction at all there will be a certain portion that hate it and hate you no matter what you do. That portion will include women who will hate you for no other reason then that you are a man.

Some people are just irredeemable assholes.
You just got to learn to ignore them if you actually want to be a creative.
>>
>>25322390
That's fair. Odysseus got raped unironically but people to this day call him "unfaithful" to his wife. Nonsensical. Must be ignored.
>>
>>25321347
in my experience men are more interesting to talk to but women are way more fun. There's a best of both worlds sweet spot around 7-8/10, above that they're usually retarded and below that they're just men
>>
>>25322390
This. Just stop giving a fuck and write the character you love. Intellectual cunts and woke retards shit on Shakespeare's female characters for 1000 different reasons. If Shakespeare is going to get shitted on, then you will too. You can't please the holier-than-thou party of perpetually miserable bitches no matter what you do.

Like most YouTube writing advice, it's virtually useless because good writing and artistic taste can't be taught. Bookfox (and the rest of them) occasionally has some good advice for newbs, but if you have already found your writing voice and have confidently applied it to a vision, you wont get much out of them. If you know what you are doing, a lot of it is "Yeah, no duh" kinds of insights. Some of them are downright wrong about a lot of shit and give what I think is horrible advice. Most of these YouTubers just use their channel to promote their own writing, which gives their entire presentation a certain level of disingenuousness.

Alyssa Matesic will do manuscript critiques from her viewers and while doing them, she will give some quality advice to these newbs. But she is another one that gets on my nerves because she never addresses the core, fundamental problems of these manuscripts. The most common problem is that these people do not have a voice, and they do not have a vision of the work as a whole. Like, people pay her to edit these manuscripts and most of the time they barely qualify as narrative outlines, let alone final copy manuscripts. I mean, some of them are fucking embarrassing. Boring journals applied to blank-faced characters, and really shitty, uninspired prose. And if you can't recognize those kinds of weaknesses in your writing and work to improve them on your own, then you have many tens of thousands of words ahead of you before you can ever hope of making something good. And you won't ever get there by watching these videos. You will only get there by swinging the pickaxe over and over, and sweating blood for page after page until you find it.

why is this so controversial, it's not like women can write convincing men much of the time either
>>
>>25323014
It usually just get used in gender war shit flinging and nit picking.

Generally if a person is decent enough at writing to write good characters of one sex they usually are competent and writing good characters of the other sex.
A lot of shit gets flung when complainers whine about representation when someone writes a story that just doesn't have the particular flavor of character they want for purely ideological reason.
Like retardedly complaining that a story about 1860s navy officers dealing with a potential mutiny brewing not having any women in the story.

You wanna know the key to writing a good female character? Just write an interesting character who also happens to be female. That's it.

If you wanna give her big, juicy tits and make her a frothing cumslut, that is perfectly fine. But the other dimensions of good characterization must also be addressed. Cater to the hated "male gaze" all you want, or even write stereotypes - it doesn't matter as long as the characterization is layered and interesting. You can't worry about what feminists and simps will say. They will bitch and moan about anything and everything. Bitching and whining gives them a purpose in life. These cunts have gotten to the point of total insanity where they say that male writers aren't permitted to describe the appearance of their female characters at all. Fuck them. Who the fuck are they to say what can and can't be written or expressed by an artist? Who elected them to be the fucking morality police for all of civilization? They can drop dead.

Thank god self-publishing exists to offset the retarded, toxic wasteland that traditional publishing has become with their appointment of worthless sensitivity reader faggots, and editors who are hypocritical gender ideology nigglets.

I just came across this guy's channel. Lucas Alpay.

I like the clinical presentation of his opinions. Alyssa Matesic's critiques are somewhat valuable, even when considering their shortcomings and her function as a former editor for the cesspool that is Penguin Random House. Even Bookfox has generally useful advice for newbs. But again, these videos will only take a newb writer so far. You still have to put in the work of finding your voice and applying it to a vision, and being ruthlessly critical of what you end up writing so you can continue to improve. Learn to differentiate what is good, and what needs to be cut, and what can be made better. There are no shortcuts.

Another problem with these literary "authorities" is that often one provides a "rule" or tip that another qualified "authority" will go on to totally contradict with their personal advice. You have to figure out what works best subjectively for the goal you have in mind, whether it is in the broad scope of the project or for a single sentence in a chapter.

It seems to me that most people who want to write a novel and tell a story are more in love with the idea of being a writer than they are in love with writing itself. And them being unable to recognize that critical gap severely limits their ability. I don't know how most of these people can produce these horrible manuscripts while being totally blind to problems that are very obvious from the first sentences of the work. Maybe some of these YouTuber vids will help. But I 100% totally agree with Stephen King: Writing can be learned, but it cannot be taught.

This YouTuber they/them is an example of someone who went to school to learn something which cannot be taught. I will bet $1000 that the only reason why this woman ever got published was for DEI reasons. Example of her writing:
