Why are they so good at writing?

English is probably the most beautiful language in the entire world tbqh. Only Greek and French comes close. Already gives an advantage.
>>
>>25321451
The great days of a nation being behind them and the present to future looking bleak as hell probably makes the imagination lean towards imagining the past more than others countries.
Which probably helps with writing.
Nostalgic imagination and all that.
The death throes of a nation sometimes causes the more verbally inclined citizens to make wordy screams that sound pleasant to the other countries.

Rain.

It rains a lot in England, so there's nothing to do except sit indoors and read. And if you read long enough, eventually you’re bound to have a go at writing something.

In Scotland, of course, it rains even more than it does in England. That’s why Scotland has so many authors. (Half the famous English authors — Robert Louis Stevenson, Arthur Conan Doyle, etc — are actually Scottish.)

The flip side of the coin is that if you live in a nice sunny country there are much better things to do than read (or write) i.e. sunbathe, go to the beach, etc.

That's why Spain only has Cervantes, and Brazil and Australia don't have books at all.

Scotland is different as its authors only became good after moving to London, where they benefited from better weather and from interacting with humans for the first time
>>
that isnt France though

ESLs can never know the beauty of English. Sucks to be them.

The seethe is palpable.

Seriously. Only modern rival is maybe Russia since it’s drenched in metaphor of contemporary culture and deeply involved with Orthodox allegory.

English poetry is second rate at best compared to the Germans and French. The only good English poets are Blake and Coleridge.
>>
>>25321584
I get tired AF when it rains from lack of vitamin d though
>>
>>25322062
Which is why all the greatest french and german poets were inspired by Anglos?
>>
>>25322062
The best French literature was written in England, the spiritual home of the language.

ESL status: confirmed.

Shakespeare is studied and performed across the entire world (except Africa). It is universally seen as the greatest set of literature, poetry, and theater ever made. Not shocking considering the long bardic tradition of the English people since prehistoric times.

Being good at English is like being bilingual.

It sounds like a just-so theory, but i've always been mystified by why the scots came up with at least half of the modern inventions that changed the course of humanity.
The terrible weather explains why the Brits were driven to colonize most of the world at least.

Because the world has been dominated by two successive English speaking powers which grants a cultural prestige to learning the language and being affiliated with its works. Nothing about this proves its intrinsic superiority.

You can make the same argument for music. Trashy American artists are played all over the world. It doesn't mean gangster rap is good.

My answer to this post is that mcdonalds has 23,512 locations worldwide

The english language is alright but english literature is kind of terrible. I’d really like to love the literature in my own language but only the satires are interesting.

Monolingual ape. Sorry for speaking 5 Languages.

Speak as many as you want, but if English isn't your first language you'll never truly understand the peak of literary culture achieved by England.
>>
>>25322884
It is, and it's still 2nd rate.

As a matter of fact it is a native language of mine, alongside 2 others. That happens when your parents move around and have different backgrounds.
Though this can be hard to understand for some inbred Dixie.

I understand trilingualism is hard to grasp when you have a pea-sized brain barely capable of processing one language.

NTA but I dont think english is the most beautiful language but it is by far the most practical one. Due to how big the british empire was and how many different linguistic roots english has it's by far the easiest language to pick up and learn in the whole western world. That doesnt make it more well suited for poetry or music but it does work when you want to have a specific language be next to universal and spoken through the whole world, these 2 things are just not related to each other and if anything english's simplicity makes it feel quite gross to speak sometimes
>>
>>25321584
Italy has plenty of absolutely fantastic authors that put most english writers to shit and the weather is super nice here for most of the year. Same applies for Spain (which has way more than Cervantes), Brazil, Portugal and even the greeks. Russians, finns and swedes spent a lot of time indoors due to weather conditions but you hardly hear of them being spoken about as much as the english

Speaking languages is very far from being able to read them.
Any English pleb can speak his own language, but he can't appreciate English poetry.

>speaking languages is very far from being able to read them
read the definition of "speak" from wikictonary, either you are playing a stupid semantics game or you are stupid.

>(transitive, stative) To be able to communicate in a language.
He speaks Mandarin fluently.
(by extension) To be able to communicate in the manner of specialists in a field.
