It's still equally safe to conclude that the goal was or wasn't reached but within the context of a narrative in which things must continue and you're required to assume that minutiae still occurs even when not being observed it is safest to assume that things moved along as described. You people talk like you believe all characters in a story are holding their breath and standing still unless the author tells you they're not.
