Is it really the bible for feminists?
never read it, but plath is like an idol to certain generation of white feminists.if you ever encounter one just say your favorite poet is ted hughes, he is the devil to them
>>25329974I've read Plath's poetry, but The Bell Jar follows the same formula. It's not bad and certainly better than postmodernslop and contemporary poetry, but it's hardly a masterpiece. It's one of those works that are elevated by its context and author i.e. a mediocre work carried by its surroundings. Alfred & Knopf rejected it for a reason and later fought and bought the rights for her complete works from Ted Hughes when they became profitable enough in spite of their mediocrity.Of course certain women find it alluring or relatable, they are poems about daddy issues, sad love and depression. Combine that with Sylvia's tragic backstory and you have a guaranteed seller among women who love to perform as oppressed, artistic and manic people despite being completely fine.>>25329977To be fair, Hughes was a shitty person all things considered.

I really enjoyed The Bell Jar. It was refreshingly bitter and resentful.
>>25329974It's a great book. Feminism just claims it because it was written by a woman, but it's "things are fucked up in bizarre ways" message is more of a universal than a specifically feminist one.
