In under 100 years, we went from teaching Latin and Greek in high school to teaching remedial English in college. What happened?
>>25330229>read Victorian thinker>they quote original Greek or Latin and discuss it:(
>>25330229No child left behind
>>25330229Federal government giving guaranteed loans for higher education.
I am a retard that's what happened, not really sorry for letting everyone down because it's not my fault really
>>25330229Feminism.
>>25330229the smart kids got moved to a specialized applied math track, everyone else got a dumbed down version of the humanities as a consolation prizesociety decided collectively to pretend the latter was the same as the education the children of elites had previously received
>>25330229Public education happened. When trying to teach everyone rather than a small percent, changes have to be be made.
>>25330229The purpose of school is to create an obedient workforce who barely know enough to to do their job. Learning English barely matters, let alone other languages.
1965 happened.
WW1 ruined the entire world permanently.
>>25330229>What happened?Elites became massified, and forgetful. It's not enough to merely gain Mammon's favor. Mostly the British aristocracy slowly and methodically being ground down and out. Continentals never had a chance. Removing peership in House of Lords is the deathknell.
>>25330229>The end of the world begins today and it's all because of an autistic Serb!
>>25330229Mass immigration

People stopped fucking speaking Latin and Greek. We also stopped mandating cursive. It's called progress.
>>25331231This would be funny if you weren't serious (and seriously stupid!)
>>25331231clearly you aren't old enough to be posting here. Do your parents know what you're up to online?
>>25330353Yeah this basically. As soon as you make a universal standard you have to bring everyone down to the lowest common denominator.
>>25331242>>25331254Found the boomers.
>>25331231Learning and writing in cursive>improves motor skills and hand-eye coordination>improves ability to spell correctly and understand word structure>improves retention and recall>improves writing speed (admittedly less important with computers, but still a benefit)I'm glad I learned cursive as a child and I feel sorry for anyone that didn't, you were robbed.
>>25331231americans consider it a special skill to be able to do joined up letters...
>>25330229What was the purpose of learning Latin and Greek in school? What utility did that have in the workforce of the time?
>>25331272It opens the entire world of classical literature to you without the burden of translational meaning loss
>>25331276Not to mention being able to understand quotations and references. Even some minor arts of BotNS only make sense if you know some Latin. I learned a bit of Latin as a kid and it's greatly enriched my life.
>>25331276ngl, if all youve had is k-12 greek and latin, i feel like youre losing more meaning trying to read it yourself than you would be reading a professional translation, no?
>>25330229N
>>25331352Has anyone ever told you that you only think in extremes before
>>25331261Cursive doesn't do any of that and beyond that is objectively slower than manuscript, lmao.
>found someones notes in an old book>its in cursive>can't read it at all>nobody can understand my print handwriting>after a period of time, neither can I>math skills are horrible and i need to use fingers to count. Never took anything beyond highschool algebra>monolingual but make fundamental sentence structure errors in even high effort academic writing>can't speak well at all>habit of mumbling and failing to find the words>sound like a southerner>College graduate from a prestigious college with a high gpa>>25331261My motor skills are horrible. I'm also horrible at translating visual examples into motoric copy. Meaning if someone says "hold it like this" I can't for the life of me copy them. If I'm given a step by step visual example such as "here is how we cook this meal and clean afterwards" i will never be able to perform it accurately no matter how much attention i give. I have to basically discover everything on my own.
>>25331231This is probably bait but I know people who really think we were speaking Latin until the 1960s. It probably answers OP's question, in the process.
>>25330229The masses are always going to be retarded. Education past elementary school should only be for the top 10 percent
