What the fuck was Edith's problem? I hate women so much it's unreal.
she had BPD and needed to be choked
>>25332644I knew a woman exactly like this in real life. Her problem was that she had no goals or desires of her own and needed validation from others to do literally anything. Edith was a good looking woman but an absolute husk of a person, nothing inside except vanity and the need for social acceptance. Basically Stoner was the worst possible husband she could ever get, a quiet, passionate man with no great aspirations or goals other than to pursue his work. She needed a man that was from her social class that would keep her in touch with the trivial goings on of upper class bitching to keep her entertained, Stoner could not fulfil this role and so she resented him immediately. She is a commentary on vapid women that are cut off from their community and forced into a life beneath their perceived station.
Edith's vindictiveness made me feel depressed when I read the book. It's now six months later and I still feel bummed out whenever it crosses my mind.
>>25332644She was just an ungrateful bitch, with a touch of naivety.
this book is a hidden misogyny generator because of this character. she is truly evil in the most banal and socially acceptable way.>>25332759 is right, she has no agency or ambition or profound spiritual infatuation with anything in the way that stoner has (a little of), which is his only redeeming feature as a person. The thing I dont understand is why on earth she married him when she absolutely hates him. Why did she do this?
>>25333018>The thing I dont understand is why on earth she married him when she absolutely hates him. Why did she do this?I think she did it because it was just 'the done thing', no? Sorry been a while since I read it.
>>25333020marrying was the done thing, but marrying stoner was in fact a slight social misstep that her parents had to be persuaded to accept. she could have married anyone else.
>>25333018>this book is a hidden misogyny generator because of this character. she is truly evil in the most banal and socially acceptable way.She just married the wrong man and it takes two people to get married.
>>25333035she is evil in the bad marriage in a way that stoner isnt though (having the affair was actually a sublime exercise in justifying life, not evil)
She is a victim of her upbringing. She clearly never really lived properly, studied in a girls school, was sheltered since early and decided to accept her first marriage prospect because apparently it's what was expected of her, even though she really didn't love William. This is very evident when they move together and she refuses to let him help with household duties. She also suffered severe post partum depression because of the pressure to have kids. That's just it. A great character that portraits some of the struggles women had at the time. She would be happier of she married someone richer, but it is what it is.
>>25333093she would have happier if she married someone she actually liked
>>25333105She was not capable of liking anyone
>>25332644Her father raped her.>>25332759Also this
>>25333109Is it confirmed in some way that she was sexually assaulted by her Dad? I always read Stoner as a commentary on the subtler ways parents can destroy their children. Grace is ruined by her devouring mother in a way that didn't require assault.
>>25333093The couple brief moments she came alive during their first meeting and later on their honeymoon made me sad. In another life with another upbringing, I think she could have loved William.
>>25332644she also cheated with someone from the theater group, in my opinion.
Why do people pretend to like shakespeare? What the fuck even is Shakespeare studies? He's just one man. I mean come on. He's good but its not like he's Calculus or Physics here.
>>25333343im willing to bet whoever it was hated it, she always seemed like she had a funky pussy
Why do people pretend to like shakespeare?>What the fuck even is Shakespeare studies? He's just one man. I mean come on. He's good but its not like he's Calculus or Physics here.We get it. Youre autistic.
>>25332644Terrible book
>>25333155Perhaps I read too much into it but the way she reacted to stoner's sexual advances (especially after the first time they fucked) made me think she had some sort of sexual trauma. But I'm open to being wrong.
>>25334159You read my post wrong man, its not like that
>>25333106She had moments of passion, I think that's what made Stoner go through with the marriage in the first place. The real tragedy is that those moments are early and fleeting, and you expect the person he briefly glimpsed to eventually shine through but she never does, like the universe played a cruel trick on Stoner
Legally speaking you can't rape your wife.
