The amount of hate this book receives proves that sensitive young men are the most oppressed and hated in society
>>25333856I just found it to be boring and constantly hearing "phony" to be annoyingNever finished it, got about half way throughMaybe I'll finish it once I get through the others I'm working through
>>25333856everybody loves that book you phony fuck
>>25333856I remember reading this in highschool (not american) and liking it. What's the controversy?
>>25334993Americans are very aggressive in their anti-intellectualism. A book that is not boring should not exist.I think some people claimed the kid wanted to fuck his little sister (????? I too did not understand how the fuck they came to this conclusion).
>>25335003Ohh yeah, americans also blamed the shooting of John Lennon on the book because the shooter was reading it.Before Karens blamed their kids doing drugs and butt sex on video-of-gaymen, they blamed on... books...The 80s must have been a crazy time in America.
>>25335023>they blamed on... books...Reminds me of akkadian tablets with written inscription on how the world was going to shit because youngster only want to read papyruses.
>>25335033>"Our earth is degenerate in these latter days; there are signs that the world is speedily coming to an end; bribery and corruption are common; children no longer obey their parents; every man wants to write a book and the end of the world is evidently approaching,"Literally, every other non-AI post on Facebook.Ironically, this is one of the oldest essays we have, and those books he refers to did not survive the wheel of time.

He's only hated because he comes from a wealthy family. People generally won't punch down on the downtrodden, but they'll happily save their wrath and vitriol for the wealthy. Imagine how different the general consensus would be if Holden grew up in a broken family like Jane. It doesn't matter that his younger brother died or that he witnessed a suicide.
>>25335041That quote takes on a different perspective once you realize that all empires inevitably collapse and that there are plenty of examples of it occurring throughout history.
>>25335176I met a Traveller from an antique land,Who said, “Two vast and trunkless legs of stoneStand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,Tell that its sculptor well those passions read,Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed:And on the pedestal these words appear:“My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings.”Look on my works ye Mighty, and despair! No thing beside remains. Round the decayOf that Colossal Wreck, boundless and bare,The lone and level sands stretch far away.
>>25333856Normal fags can't cope with someone pointing out most of society is just people sucking up to each other so they call him whiny for not shutting up and playing the dysfunctional game.
This book is a great filter because if someone can't get the fuck over themselves and just take in holden as he is and absorbing the story they should just stick to genre
>>25335167For a country as communist hating as america the intense raw hatred for anyone not born into total poverty is insane. Their character, the events in their lives, their struggles, the decisions they make. None of it matters. Having money is the original sin, ironically in a country all about building you and your family up and giving them the life you didn't have. How the average american can possibly reconcile these opposite viewpoints ill never know

>>25335224Holden isn't just some middle-class kid, though; he's from the upper strata of society seeing as how he mingles in the same circles as Ivy League students and his dad is an educated, corporate lawyer.>For a country as communist hating as america the intense raw hatred for anyone not born into total poverty is insane.America is a land of opposites.

>>25335003>A book that is not boring should not exist.Performative reader spotted. Post favorite book
I hate it because it's a boring book with boring characters who do nothing of substance. Only reason I read it was because I was forced to for school. Otherwise I would have dropped it after the first chapter. I am perfectly happy with a book about a sensitive young man if and only if the story is actually interesting.
>>25336371I was homeschooled so wasn't forced to read anything I didn't want toJohn Green of Looking For Alaska fame suggested it to me back in 2011 and I took the baitI have no idea why he suggested itHe also suggested Fahrenheit 451, only slightly better albeit a prophecy for our times
>>25336379I liked the point/themes of Fahrenheit 451, but the characters and prose were a bit flat imo.
