I don't like the overuse of the stereotype of the "strong woman". Nearly any actual acting hero in the novels tends to be a woman.
In my opinion, he tries too hard.

As for the science fiction, it is great. He actually does the work and when he break a law of nature, he explicitly states which one. The only tech-bubble that feels a bit off was about how the Hyper-Space drive is supposed to work (through String theoretical dimensions); would be far better if he has let the puzel of the FTL technology of the Xeelee a mystery. I mean, the other species just toke it from them, so, there is no need to explain it anyway.
