He kept various mistresses throughout his life, and he seems to have gotten on fairly well with some of them. And the wife was his accomplice. Before he was anything else, pervert, monster, writer, Frenchman, etc, Sade was, first and foremost by his birth, a nobleman. He was in the club. This also worked to his advantage, and his pampered youth, during which he was denied nothing, seems to have informed his psychology. Imagine a very unpleasant, energetic, autistic and atheistic man who as a child, was never once told "no". And then throughout his 20s and 30s, society finally starts telling him "no", in ever harsher steps. And then the second-biggest "no": prison. He explodes in prison, more than most. This is how we get the autistic shrieking of his writings.
