Overrated or worth a read?
As good as they say
Both can be true. That said, I like it a lot and think it is definitely worth a read. All of McCarthy is "worth a read" though, even his worst.

Make sure you generally understand how evolution works before you read it. If you're ESL you might have some trouble, corncob often differentiates who is speaking by their dialect, vocabulary, and accent. It's extremely violent and depressing, don't read it if you think you can't handle that.

Analogues imply that the cultural knowledge they have received has been changed by time, spoorless because where they exactly came from or when they originated is anybody's guess, but that knowledge is available to them nevertheless.
