What are some good books for those learning english as a second language? I bought Lewis Carrol works and I want some recomendations.
>>25354129Alice in Wonderland is very idiosyncratic, full of puns and wordplay and I don't think it's a good resource for learning English, much like Shakespeare and Joyce aren't.Instead read authors with simpler, limited vocabulary. Hemingway, Austen, Tolkien (Hobbit in particular). Confederacy of Dunces felt very accessible to me, but I read it after all the big boys like Melville and Joyce, so maybe I'm biased.
>>25354129Any good (i.e. old) children's books.
>>25354405Children's books are almost never a good choice for a learner. Natives can't tell how non-standard the language typically is.
>>25354439Well, yeah, you need a certain amount of care with that. But that's more a thing with books for very young children. Past those, there are plenty of good choices with no wacky language.
>>25354439>Children's books are almost never a good choice for a learner.Really? I've always tought children's book were easier to read than books for grown up.
>>25354129I recommend E.B White’s classic children’s books. He simplifies language in a proper, informed, and effective manner while entertaining the reader. White co-authored “The Elements of Style”, a pocket style guide to English grammar. It would be a good study companion to any of his novels.
