If you don't know AT LEAST these 4 languages you shouldn't even be posting on /lit/. For real, 90% of all worthwhile literature is written in those 4 languages, if you read translations instead of reading those works in their original languages you're a pseudo-reader, a worm, a nonentity.
>>
>>25356318
my English is at C1 right now, I'm learning Latin at the moment and I plan to learn French and German in the future also to C1

I read everything in french, the only true language of literature. You are gay.
>>
>>25356404
Uhh but you just read OP's post in English?
>>

Shitpost is not literature. Anyway a third of english words are derived from french, really makes you think.
>>

>I read everything in french
>>
>>25356318
I know English, Spanish and French (though the latter is rusty since I don't often get to practice).
I've been meaning to learn a language bur can't decide if I should learn Latin, German, Japanese, Mandarin, Russian, Italian or Greek first.
Any suggestions?
>>
>>25356698
Mandarin, of course. The most engaging language to learn.
>>
>>25356318
Lmao, he reads only WLS (World language slop).
Enjoy your ”classics” and ”masterpieces” determined and chosen by plebeian masses. I mean I guess ”accessability” is one criteria for deciding if literature is decent or not, but putting it on a pedestal like that.. big yikes!
Now excuse me you common language commoner, but I’ve got some Estonian gems to read through tonight. Not much point discussing them with you, since they’re so rare you’ve never even heard of any of them. But I mean we all have our own tastes I suppose. It is okay to enjoy mass market language slop if that is your thing.
>>
>>25356318
That is an ok start for a year 6 student. But if you are voting age and don't know English, Latin, Greek, French, German, Dutch, Spanish, Italian, and one eastern language you are not a serious intellect.
>>
>>25356318
Only 4? huh i guess your almost a real reader, about halfway there
>>
>>25356899
It is realistically impossible to maintain more than 4 languages throughout life, unless your entire free time is dedicated to it. Anyone who thinks otherwise has a shallow understanding of language learning.

The best literature can only be appreciated by native speakers of the language.
This is what multi-lingual faggots don't get. They can only ever be dabblers in foreign literature.

Trvke. Even a person who is entirely fluent in reading and speaking a language and has immersed themselves in a country that speaks it for 10 years is still going to understand only a very small fraction of the contemporary dialect, let alone things written centuries ago in that language. But auto-didact retards on /lit/ think that spending a few years learning a language online makes them better than people who read translations. It's comical that this delusion is still so prevalent.

I know French
As someone primarily interested in literature German doesn't seem to offer enough to make it worth learning
Sometimes I think about learning Latin but I don't think it'd be worth learning either
>>
>>25357051
The only languages actually worth learning for literature are French, English, Chinese, and Greek.
>>

>Even a person who is entirely fluent in reading and speaking a language and has immersed themselves in a country that speaks it for 10 years is still going to understand only a very small fraction of the contemporary dialect
Retarded monolingual opinions. You can read "contemporary dialects" on social media. It is nothing difficult. If you know academic French it would take you an hour to understand how Parisian street urchins talk.

Those Asian languages are definitely not worth learning for a western scholar. You'll spend at least 5 years studying Japanese or Chinese and you'll only be able to read modern books, if you wanna read Mishima, Murasaki Shikibu, Cao Xueqin, etc you'll have to spend another 5 years just learning more ideograms and grammar rules. It's a huge amount of effort for a very small pay off.
>>
>>25357125

>>
>>25357137
Hahaha, yes, you're definitely more intelligent than Goethe, that's why you post on 4chan.

I feel like my english level has plateaued, i don't know if it's because talking with fellow ESL ( And EFL retards ) is my main exposure to the language or because i reached a level where i can basically understand anything adequately to the point i no longer feel compelled to put in any effort expanding my vocabulary or correcting my grammar.

Shit, i sometimes feels like my french degraded from reading too little too, maybe also due to the constant exposure to the engrish language.
As for my german i'm working on it little by little, but i don't think i'll be able to read or enjoy any work of literature anytime soon, i do hope i'll be good enough to watch youtube vids in a few months, which might let me reach escape velocity for fluency.

I speak two of these and unless you're really interested in reading something poetic it's a waste of time to learn anything past English and some Greek and Latin. It's fun but it doesn't matter. Bilingweenies are insecure mutts (like myself) who use one of the few positives of their unfortunate heritage as a replacement penis. It genuinely does not matter unless you have a particular use for it.

Preserving dead languages is important for archival and historical purposes, but it does nothing to enhance one's appreciation of the classics as art. Most people who "study" these dead languages don't actually speak them, they only know enough cobbled together grammar to struggle through old texts which are the only remnant of the language anyway, so they have nothing else to compare it to. It's a worthless exercise for people with too much time on their hands.

If you want 98% of the great works and the western canon:
>Ancient Greek
>Latin
>Italian & Spanish
>French, German, & English

Scandinavia has no value... a total waste of space. Dutch is free with German and English. Portuguese is free with Spanish.

The rest of the world isn't worth the effort. Their buffet only has scraps to choose from. Arabic? Sanskrit? Ancient or middle Chinese? Don't make me laugh. You can read about a little buddhist humanoid-monkey and I will read dante.

>>25360302
>>Ancient Greek
I hate reading "Ancient Greek" because it ignores the fact that there are 7 kinds of Ancient Greek all vastly different enough that even the Ancient Greeks needed to study the different branches of their own language before they could bop around the Medd. Ancient Greek isn't like Latin where it was monolithic enough that as the language changed and evolved most of the meaning stayed the same, Ancient Greek is weird in that a word in Koine doesn't translate 1:1 to Say Doric or Attic, where would carry a different connotation.
For example: the word "To bother, to annoy" someone in Doric (What the Spartans spoke) is "To sexually assault, to molest" in Attic, (Which was spoken by the Athenians) which is why when you read accounts written in Attic you get Athenians who always complain the Spartans are too "gruff/to impolite/too harsh/too coarse" because Doric is way more direct compared to Attic.
So in Sparta you aren't "annoying me" you are legitimately mentally molesting me and none of them will bat an eye in public if you said that, while in Athens a declaration of someone "mentally molesting you" in public would get reactions we are far more used too of people staring at you bewildered and maybe even a visit from the town watch to try you for publicly indecent speech.

I don't know how it happens in other countries but here this is for better or worse the case. Picking or not Spanish as your second language in school (besides English) is how classes of different levels are made, as a way of circumventing the official democratic dogma of not makign separate classes by ability within a given school. The idea is that Spanish is easier to pass basic teenage test for, so the lazy or deficient pupils pick it. Other languages are how classes of higher level are made, since the classes are organised by options taken. Students pick them even when they don't like those languages or suck at languages in general, because that's how you get the better teachers in maths and have groups of 40 pupils without any juvenile delinquent. Now some schools have an Arabic option so they can segregate the worst of the diversity while technically avoiding raycisssm. I assume a similar phenomenon happens in the US for obvious reasons. The unfortunate result is that few literate people have bothered with Spanish in the last half century.

>>25360458
When any foreigner from the 2nd century BC onwards talked about learning (ancient) Greek it means Attic-Koine. Everything of relevance except perhaps Homer is readable if you mastrr Attic. The rare texts not in those such as Archimedes are still fine. Koine is based on and the direct descendant of Attic and it's a non issue to get to it afterwards.
No one cares about the special snowflake Cypriot dialect. "Pure" Doric is also useless. There are a few dozen specialists of inscirptions in the world that are fluent in the dialectal differences. Ancient Greeks themselves stopped caring and adopted the Attic-based Koine.
>>
>>25360458
This kind of shit is why people should learn living languages before dead ones.

>The unfortunate result is that few literate people have bothered with Spanish in the last half century.
