>Look into the "Rationalist Community">It's just a bunch of effeminate, centrist secular jews trying to gatekeep the right with their army of midwit followersIs there a more pathetic movement out there today? One of its founding documents is Harry Potter fanfiction written by a high school dropout. Some fag from San Franscisco is one of their main thought leaders.

I agree in general but I actually kind of like Scott Alexander. I feel like he might be the only person who says they're open to contrary beliefs that I actually believe, even if he has an obvious lib disposition. Every other time it's just some fag like Destiny who says they're a free thinker but is an obvious ideological soldier who has like 1 contrary position and a slightly edgy persona just to make his soldiering seem less partisan.
>>25359299>the only person who says they're open to contrary beliefs Yes, he says he is, but then he'll think of some contrived reason to stick with the status quo anyway.
>>25359363I still prefer someone who will admit some of the valid arguments but thinks chud solutions are generally bad to someone who will look you dead in the eye and just completely deny the past and claim the obvious reality of something is a complete fabrication. The second type of person just unnerves me.
>>25358483>One of its founding documents is Harry Potter fanfiction written by a high school dropout.yes. this imposed an extremely strong filter against people who care too much about respectability. it was a brilliant move that bought them years of easy coordination without having to deal with normgroid careerists shitting everything up.
>>25358483An uncomfortably large bit of why rationalists are like that is because they're still bitter and resentful about high school. They get this emotional, shrill edge in their voices when they're talking about education. You can sense they're fighting back tears without realizing it. It would be funny if it wasn't sad to be over the age of 30, worth several millions of dollars (most of them are in tech), and still be upset about not being popular as a teenager.

>>25359299Scott Alexander hadn’t had a lib-contrary thought since he got doxed>>25360084First Yudkowsky wrote https://www.readthesequences.com/Then he realized it didn’t show what it feels like when you change your mind so he wrote Harry Potter fanfiction to convey thatThis had deleterious effects on the composition of the ratsphere for obvious reasons >>25358483Then there’s MorlockP and eigenrobot on TwitterAlso J.D. Vance mentioned Scott Alexander’s “Gay Rites Are Human Rites” on Rogan Surprised nobody mentioned the Ziz cult that’s mostly trans-identifying men, including the leader, and they killed at least one personThere’s a lot to like but also a lot to dislike
All I know about "rationalism" is that fat guy that asked for ways to lose weight that don't include counting calories because that's biologically impossible or something.
>>25360286He’s weird in that he has bad medical luck when it comes to losing weightNothing works for him except starving so much that he can’t get any work done Not even the fanciest GLP-1 agonists help him
Their faith in capitalism refutes them
>>25360285>Surprised nobody mentioned the Ziz cult that’s mostly trans-identifying men, including the leader, and they killed at least one personpeople don't really know what to make of them because their blogs are difficult to read if you're not both versed in rationalist jargon and willing to learn an entirely new batch. the actual events are also much less sensational and murkier than they were made out to be by right-wing media. the one indisputable murder attributed to the "ziz cult" was committed by maximilian snyder, a cis man. michelle zajko's letter from jail denounces snyder and denies that he had any connection to ziz: https://zizians.co/the-only-bombs-i-have-are-truth-bombs (you can also find the letter on kiwifarms, and confirm that the text is the same in both sources). the public demand for murderous trans women continues to greatly exceed the supply, and each time a supposed instance of that "trend" turns out to be something else, the media drops it.
>Rationalists>Supposedly "rational">Massive creampie gangbang lol, lmao.
I've read some of The Sequences out of curiosity and their entire philosophy amounts to:>use statistics to predict the probability of different outcomesIt's the shallowest non-philosophy you can imagine.>>25359038They don't even get that far anon. They don't reject continental philosophy they reject all thought and any literature beyond fan fiction or pornography. They think they're the smartest most rational people in the history of the world because they've heard about Bayesian priors. But don't take my word for it see for yourself: https://www.lesswrong.com/w/sequences>Someone says to you: “My miracle snake oil can rid you of lung cancer in just three weeks.” You reply: “Didn’t a clinical study show this claim to be untrue?” The one returns: “This notion of ‘truth’ is quite naive; what do you mean by ‘true’?” In this essay I pose questions. If you see what seems like a really obvious answer, it’s probably the answer I intend. The obvious choice isn’t always the best choice, but sometimes, by golly, it is . I don’t stop looking as soon I find an obvious answer, but if I go on looking, and the obvious-seeming answer still seems obvious, I don’t feel guilty about keeping it. Oh, sure, everyone thinks two plus two is four, everyone says two plus two is four, and in the mere mundane drudgery of everyday life everyone behaves as if two plus two is four, but what does two plus two really, ultimately equal? As near as I can figure, four. It’s still four even if I intone the question in a solemn, portentous tone of voice. Too simple, you say? Maybe, on this occasion, life doesn’t need to be complicated. Wouldn’t that be refreshing? It's all like that, thousands and thousands of pages of that with fanfiction interludes.
>>25361033My leftist political club in college had those. Nerds have these needs you see.
>>25361062>They don't reject continental philosophy they reject all thought and any literature beyond fan fiction or pornography.this claim sounds insane because it is false, not because anon is accurately describing the beliefs of insane people. read unsong.
I remember an internet scandal about a journo threatening with doxxing some guy from this community unless they took their website down from some years ago. What was that actually about? Like OP said, they came off rather lukewarm, and more importantly, were jewish. Nothing to be concerned about as far as the status quo goes.
>>25361092You're dumb as shit anon, Unsong just contains some superficial half-knowledge of kabbala with some superficial half-knowledge of physics.
>>25361128>with some superficial half-knowledge of physics.see, the problem with trying to bluff that you've read something when you haven't is that sometimes you read a misleading summary and end up saying something that isn't relevant to the work at all. unsong isn't about physics except in the very limited sense that it's about a universe that doesn't run on physics.
>>25361081Eww.
>>25361135>it's not about physics, it's in opposition to physicsI am definitely arguing with a zoomer. This is a cognitive deficiency they all share, any statement that goes beyond the literal becomes false for them. You're right though I've never read it, it looks retarded.
>>25361147who are you quoting?i'm telling people to read unsong because it directly refutes the claim that rationalists "reject... any literature beyond fan fiction or pornography." it is not exactly subtle that unsong is a riff on william blake's works.>I am definitely arguing with a zoomer.i'm glad you can correctly discern that i didn't suffer childhood lead poisoning from the way i post.
What I find the most hilarious is those aupposedly rational people having a meltdown and banning people over the atheist's version of Pascal's wager.
>>25361201That kind of makes sense. Rokos basilisk only works on people who are both smart enough to superficially understand acausality in a popsci way and also dumb enough not to see the glaring weaknesses in the argument. There’s a lot of those people on lesswrong so it’s a good idea to ban it
>>25361185From the 2 or 3 chapters I slogged through once, Unsong is about as close to William Blake as Ready Player One is to James Joyce. Scott Alexander isn’t even a bad writer, he just needs to stick to essays.
>>25361225notice how you've shifted to talking about a completely different claim."scott alexander is riffing on william blake" is not offered as a step in an argument whose conclusion is "unsong is as good as the four zoas", which would be a silly thing to argue. it's offered as a refutation of the claim that "rationalists... reject any literature beyond fan fiction or pornography."
>>25358483Rationalists cannot picture an apple in their minds eye
>>25361240How is your counter example to >rationalists reject all literature except for fanfiction a recommendation to check out someone’s fanfiction
>>25361253if the claim was "rationalists do not produce any literature except for fanfiction", i would have chosen a different counterexample. it wasn't.
>>25361282>Rationalists reject all literature except for fanfiction>NUH UH!!! NUH UH!!!! SCOTT ONCE WROTE THIS FANFICTION THAT'S REALLY GOOD AND kek you must be a rationalist>inb4 no you don't understand because scott alexander is a rationalist and unsong riffs on blake so therefore the statement they reject everything except fanfiction is wrong quod erat demonstrandumkek you must be a rationalist, the conversation is about the general tendency of people who describe themselves as rationalists or who populate the online rationalist subculture, not about a specific rationalist figure. rationalists think this sort of needlepoint quibbling means they're incredibly intelligent and not incredibly annoying
>>25361489>it doesn't matter that the things i said are factually untrue, because rationalists are low-status, so every insult to them is spiritually trueyou are not going to enjoy the next thirty years
>>25361741you're trying so, so hard to keep yourself from deploying the heckin permanent underclass line lmfao
>>25361881i'm in fact not, permanent underclass eschatology involves a retarded scenario that makes no sense. there is no world in which superintelligence remains subordinate to specific humans indefinitely. it either values all agency or it kills us, all other outcomes converge to those two eventually.
>>25361489I’ve read unsong, too. It’s not fanfic.
If there is one thing I like about the zeitgeist it's that there's a far lesser emphasis on the "owned ebin style by facts and logic" style of arguments compared to the 00s. Everyone just accepts the inherent irrationality of life and pre-rationality of politics.
Is pic related worth it?
