>>25360046I have never heard of such a movement before, what are its defining characteristics?
https://neopasseism.substack.com/p/david-foster-wallaceTheir take on DFW…
i would normally say buy an ad but i'll indulge it since i'm bored af rn
what i want to know is what will these people try to sell me once they have my attention instead of what they'll try to sell me before they have my attention
>>25360562they are trying to define a new product category "neo-passeism/neo-decadent literature" for their writings. maybe 10 or 15 years ago some lame nepos tried the same thing with "alt-lit". alt to what exactly? really they were just trying to sell books to people who wished they lived in brooklyn. so, who is the target consumer for "neo-passeism/neo-decadent" texts? not sure. i'm trying to think of a buyer persona for this, and i'm drawing a blank.
>>25360570the temptation to 'circle up' in the literary sense is indeed a strong one...
>>25360570They’re aging millennials who haven’t written anything of note since 2011. they use substack to spam stuff since the realization is setting in that they’re almost 40-50 years old with no accomplishments to speak of. Their whole thing is railing against “mainstream” lit, but it’s all incoherent in terms of what style they want to uplift. They are what the dime square people will become in ten or so years
>>25360577substack is utterly worthless. just not a single thing on there worth reading. or if there is something on there it requires sifting through so much garbage to find that you're still worse off. junk social media site filled with annoying people who actually think posting has any academic merit. am I wrong?
>>25360570>>25360574It's interesting. The internet makes it easy for people to connect, yet none of those circles or group end up being... Well, anything at all.It seems that they are all about content but don't bother about cultivating a style or substance, not to mention they reek of desperation because they want to become the next big thing.
>>25360963they're cargo culting a literary movement
>>25360046>Neo-PasseismI couldn't find any of their books on Amazon that have the sample that lets you read the first few pages. So can't say. Looking at this Justin Isis guy's photos was a good laugh though. Also, I read some of that substack on DFW, and they're embarrassingly angsty. I agree with some of their points on DFW being formulaic etc., but what you have to ask yourself is why is Infinite Jest, with all its faults, still so popular/widely acclaimed. As much as people like shitting on it, and some of it is ofc deserved, it's still an extremely interesting and fun read. It's unique, it had good foresight on things like FaceTime filters etc., and even if you dislike the structure, it does completely fit with the entire theme/ambience of the novel. It's ironic that the first guy would say that Oblivion was his best work, because imo every single short story in it was garbage, and I think that was one of my least favorite books I've read. But shitting on infinite jest has just become the new popular thing to do, as a reactionary things to not want to be seen as one of those guys who claims it completely changed their lives, its the best novel ever etc. But please don't write such an aggressive dismissive review of something like Infinite Jest when you're stuck at 5 reviews on Amazon. Or do, it is kinda funny.
>>25362244Like how can you actually write something like this over the age of 12? Its so embarrassing..."He was a linguistic white motherfucker (read as: prescriptivist) and forced (compelled) black students ‘allegedly’ to write in STANDARD WHITE ENGLISH in spite of claims of racism. (Side note: I once saw a dude in the mall walking into Urban Outfitters using Infinite Jest as an obvious lifestyle prop. I almost sucker punched him but was worried I would have severely injured him, for he was thin and brittle. But you never know, wiry fuckers can be sturdy…unless you crush their orbital bones to dust with a solid right hook from behind.) So anyway, my best friend, Sarah Sottile PhD, stripper, patron saint of drug addicts, genius"
>>25360046I was vaguely associated with them but the head honcho of the movement, Justin, doesn't like me. weird enough him and I have the same first name. I never get along with other Justins.
>>25360938sounds like a personal problem to me. I find plenty to read there and I post there too.
