How do /lit/izens deal with anti-intellectual parents with unsanctioned screen times and minimal social lives? Can one even begin to convince a boomer living in an anti-humanist echochamber that their temperament, intelligence and daily mood is affected by the industrially refined doomslop that they consume?I've been thinking of books to gift and introduce to them since unemotional, unbiased and neutral conversations aren't possible. Anything educational regarding logical fallacies, neurotransmitters or social media grifting is of interest, something that is well resarched and awakes curiosity to learn. But contemporary nonfiction is filled with these 20 word titles with colons and obnoxious cover art that read like they were written for children and look like airport literature.
>>25373111You can't change them.Eventually you'll see.
>>25373111you could give them Addiction by Design, though it doesn't sound like they'd be up for an academic anthropology text.best of luck in any case, however quixotic your efforts are.
Idk just gift them blood meridian
>>25373120i understand, i'm just testing out some soft compromises that would feel more satisfying than doing nothing.it just eats at my conscience to stand on the side and do nothing, because their intelligence and ability to see beauty in the world and trust people are massively impacted by the slop.it's not about the politics to me. i'd be fine with any performative opinions, if just the empathy, curiosity and basic emotional maturity reached a tolerable baseline level. >>25373126thank you anon, this looks interesting
>>25373111dont recommend nonfiction.split your book pile in 3 or 10. rank the piles. leave one of the piles at their home. life is mathematical, society is a machine you pedal
>>25373111>Can one even begin to convince a boomer living in an anti-humanist echochamber that their temperament, intelligence and daily mood is affected by the industrially refined doomslop that they consume?dont concern troll -- argue
>>25373111be respectful if you think convincing them is worthwhile
>>25373111dont be dispassionate — be unemotional
>>25373111start with the Bible
>>25373111I set up a nice book shelf for my mother and organized all her books and she does nothing but watch youtube short slop all day.
>>25374931That is a dead end already explored. They are cognitively landlocked and i have no authority in their eyes to ”know how things really are”.>concern trollingThe objective is not to shape a ”better person, like me” out of them, but to inspire politically neutral interest and curiosity in exploring something new that is not on a screen>>25374935>>25374944Good points.People who are used to operate with only extreme emotions get stunned when they see someone talking about complex ideas with a graceful, forgiving, non-partisan and non-antagonizing manner.>>25374986sheesh, that might be the reality i’ll face too.I’m thinking of an approach where I give one book and i introduce it verbally as something that sparks interest and expands/educates on something that’s important on a daily basis. Less chance of a decision paralysis and i provide the safety rails and context before hand for them to be able to latch on more easily what the potential book is about
>>25373111Just let the robots robot. People are not ready for the revelation that humans are really just deluded animals.
>>25373111Holy shit you're insufferable. Tell your parents /lit/ feels sorry for them.

>>25373111>deal with anti-intellectual parents>convince a boomeryou can't>living in an anti-humanist echochamber [...] industrially refined doomslop that they consumepseud wordsalad meant to convince yourself you're better (at least for being in the know) when the genetic trajectory is the same and you're really no different, just don't realize it yet>books to gifta nice gesture, they'll love sweeping the dust off them and keeping them in the bookshelf for display when guests comes, next to those dictionaries and atlases and history books>awakes curiosity to learnno such thing, you either feel the need to and seek it out on your own or you don'talso reading doesn't make you smart, the "higher iq - higher number of books read" correlation is inverse = smart people feel the need to read so they read, they don't become smart because they ('re forced to) read>contemporary nonfiction ismeant for bookshelves, bathroom bookstands and conversation>written for childrenwhich they are>look like airport literaturewhich they treat it asdon't mean to sound like a jerk, man, but i've unfortunately been in your shoes longer than i can remember and truth is it just doesn't matter, you either got a good deal and have some fun or pulled the short end of the stick and you end up bitter because your worldview is shattered gradually learning you parents, those mighty ones you looked up to, were, are and in fact always will be subhuman biomass that just want to survive to watch sportsball variations/turkish soapoperas and talk on Whatsapp groups with former work colleagues and despite all your revolt and feverish devouring of literature you'll only slowly but surely be following in their footsteps because in the end there's really nothing but geneticsyou tell yourself you're never be like them and will raise your child differently, so on so forth but you know that's a lie because the first time you snap you inevitably reconfigure into a perfect origami unfolding of them so at most what your life will amount to will be a constant day-to-day struggle to be normal and not look/think/act like them, which is already such a sad state of affairs in itself really
>>25375598>the genetic trajectory is the same and you're really no different, just don't realize it yetoh i have realized it and it's certainly contributing to a quarter life crisis.I haven't even found a "fix" or "cure" for my own bad reclusive and avoidant tendencies, but i have managed to exit the pipeline of rightist moral apathy which would be a life-affirming thing to share. no matter how resilient of an attitude i try to tackle this with, i have this creeping suspicion that the genetic aspect truly is an overpoweringly defining one. however i haven't done the research on that so it's a constant unsure "what if">you'll only slowly but surely be following in their footsteps because in the end there's really nothing but geneticslot of times i'm convinced of this as well, but i do want to defy it, because i find myself believing in anti-pessimist whitepills more and more as they have improved aspects of my life (through coexistence with new social acquaintances though, rarely books)>you tell yourself you're never be like them and will raise your child differently, so on so forth but you know that's a lie because the first time you snap you inevitably reconfigure into a perfect origami unfolding of them so at most what your life will amount to will be a constant day-to-day struggle to be normal and not look/think/act like themstruggling with this big time. however i still see my will to change these things this early in life as an opportunity instead of a threat.thanks for the contribution, anon
>>25373111/lit/izens sounds so pleb coded. i prefer the aristocratic /lit/erati.
My mother knows of my immense passion for philosophy and the fact that I am a PhD candidate in the field and she makes a point to try to mention philosophy as often as possible and say I should "read the Bible instead of wasting my time on earthly wisdom".
>>25375784>read the Bible instead of wasting my time on earthly wisdomim frustrated with what americants do with that concept

They're done. It's over. You can't fix online boomers. Answer the occasional text and tolerate visiting them at Christmas until they're dead.
