Anons who read non-fiction, let's talk note taking>notebook or digital?>is zettelkasten a meme?>are commonplace books a meme?>one notebook per subject or per source?>software recommendations?>reference system?>summaries or mindmaps?
I always read with a mechanical pencil and underline things. At the top of the page I right a few words to summarize the topic and why I consider it noteworthy. I also use my mechanical pencil to clip onto the corner of the page so as to weight it down so I don't have to hold the book open. Sometimes I staple 10 or 15 sheets of blank printer paper together and write notes with p. # references and quotes. If I am doing that I attach it to a clipboard and keep it near.
>>25374192>notebook or digital?Depends on your personal preferences however you can easily get the best of both worlds (actually writing something and back-up/ability to share easily/long term storage of digital) if you use a tablet/ipad/etc, generally speaking the most important part is actually recall and using your notes, if you take notes and use them only once (for a uni course for instance) then it's kinda irrelevant how you take them, however if it's something you plan to use often I think the long term storage capabilities combined with search is simply better, in my case it's cheatsheeets, concepts, mind maps and all that.Digital however has the bad tendency to make you copy things without much elaboration, which is why you should always pause after watching a video/reading a chapter and explain it in your own words.tldr: you don't have to choose one, sometimes you want the ability to jot down something on a piece of paper quickly and the benefits of the digital version>is zettelkasten a meme?It can work for you but for most people who obsess about it I would argue it's irrelevant, more like active procrastination.>software recommendations?Obsidian. Local files, simple markup, intuitive UI, supports back-links/outgoing links (pointers to this note and pointers outgoing from this note)
I don't take notes. My mind is enough.
I just post-it notes with a summary of the point.
>notebook or digital?Analogue note taking is better for retaining information, but I'm not going to cite any proof. Digital note taking, done properly, is better for finding information when you forget it.I recommend analogue because it is much easier to make your notes work for you. Unless you're going to make an application of your own, taking notes in software is always going to be plagued with choices made by and for other people.>is zettelkasten a meme?Zettelkasten, being cards and boxes, is not a meme. Atomic information that can be accessed non-linearly and copied, reorganised or recategorised at any time, it is the closest to the human mind that your extended mind is ever going to get. Even if you never find the need for all the utility, and just store your cards linearly, it still has the advantage of a being the exact number of pages it needs to be, unlike a notebook.>are commonplace books a meme?Commonplace books are a meme once you know zettelkasten exists. It's like insisting on using a typewriter.>one notebook per subject or per source? You don't need worry about having a notebook per subject, source, or any other separation once you have zettelkasten.>reference system? The part of zettelkasten that is a meme is following someone else's system. Just put the cards in the box. Your own system has to evolve naturally. If you're doing a web search for 'how to zettelkasten' you have already lost.Probably the same for almost anything. Become a better version you, not a poor imitation of someone else.>summaries or mindmaps?Summarising is a skill you should practice.
>>25375018>Zettelkasten, being cards and boxes, is not a memewhy not digital?>>25374729well I'm not smart enough. I end up "knowing" a lot of things but it's a scatterbrained fake knowledge that has embarrassed me on one occasion when someone asked for an exact reference.>>25374661>Digital however has the bad tendency to make you copy things without much elaborationtrue>>25374879>>25374217it's good to go through a book but I want to be able to easily find it later
I tend to read on kindle and export the notes to obsidian but I've been migrating to paper and building a small library. Now im wondering whether i should underline on paper and eventually copy to obsidian or instead of marking just using sticknotes
>>25375382You can put digital cards in digital boxes. It is conceptually the same. You just need to be careful the application you use doesn't force you to use someone else's system, which is the meme.
