goes without saying I wouldn’t enter either way but it’s always disheartening seeing an unimaginative prompt. a good prompt is so exciting and honestly they’re fun to think of; there’s no reason not to have a good one.
my uni had a poetry mag and they wanted submissions about your ‘slant’, which I thought was a clever one.

How do you come up with the prompts? I recall you said you don't use AI to randomly generate one so how do you go about your process? Just think about it for some time and settle on what seems best?

Hopefully I can post

I’ve said this before: That I arrive at them simply by getting lost in thought during hour-long car rides to and from work.
But, in regard to what you’re asking for specifically here—a thought-to-thought process—it’s difficult to describe…
Basically, they’re just seperate epiphanies you get after thinking a long time about a lot of different things.
Well, that explanation sucked, but I actually had a different process this month…
When I drive to work, it’s usually music that gives me the headspace to come up with prompts, but, for the past weeks, I’ve only been listening to this 48-hour long seminar about “The Divine Comedy”—
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AG3EMDvKT0&list=PLVZc4bUijHOw
—which takes a lot of bandwith to follow, so I haven’t really been thinking about much else at all.
And even though I’ve had the past few days off work for the 4th, I’ve mainly spent them cleaning my library & room while watching the World Cup, not arriving at prompts.
This was true all the way up until 12 hours ago (4 hours before they were to be released).
So, for the first time, I had to quickly induce a state of mind to get what I needed, and, luckily for you, I can trace every ricochet of idea.
I opened YouTube and just started looking at thumbnails—basic visual stimulaiton.
Insights reveal themselves to me all the time simply by pressing “Random Page” on Wikicommons, and I was planning on doing that, but, for some reason, for the first time, I wanted to start with thumbnails (they’re almost like loaded Rorschach tests, if you think about it).
Didn’t click on it, don’t even know what the title was, but there was this disco-ball-looking orb thing in one of the (science-related?) thumbnails.
It made me think about Blender, and how I like making see-through stuff so very much (pic related).
The value that makes a material “glassy” is called its “Transmission.”
Click! I thought about how bright and clear Dante’s Paradiso is, how that professor said that the “Divine Comedy” is God speaking through its author—a ‘divine transmission.’
I think about the Ebola outbreak. How ideas spread. Gearboxes. Even how someone could worldplay it as a “Trans Mission.”
Character next. Within a few minutes, I put this song on—
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4A1q2fbxEY
—and started to wonder about what kind of person exists under this theme.
>Why this song?
With my time off I’ve been gathering my fav music together. It just so happened that this was at the top of the list.
(It’s one of the only songs I sacrifice my ears to, playing it as loud as possible, and—I swear—it makes me see things sometimes.)
But it wasn’t enough to close my eyes. So I searched for a video that I felt embodied the track: Literally typed “volcano eruptions.”
And, listening to that track, while reaching this frame of this video
https://youtu.be/EosVY9nWtGE?si=1cOKmbv9vStEW7JI&t=856
I had both prompts set!

Thank you for such a detailed reply. I wouldn't have imagined it was such a complex and yet sort of organic process.

Probably not me, at least.
I had a story idea, but there were other things I needed to do.

As Mr. and Ms. Mercy sat down for dinner, I crept around the back of their house. I leaned under the window to eavesdrop.

"You didn't think," Mr. Mercy said, "I wanted to shoot Joe?"

"Honey, we could have handled it better."

"I told him about the wolves."

"He was 14. A kid, for Christ's sake."

"I gave him a warning. I said, 'You there Joe? Answer right now!'"

"He was too scared to respond."

"I, just... our stables are thin. Can't work as well as I used to. I can't let the wolves eat us. Not now. Not out here. Not our land."

I glared at them through the window. He was paler than he was in court. His hands shook so badly the coffee kept spilling down his shirt.

For six days and seven nights, I staked out their house.

I didn't just want to kill Mr. Mercy. I wanted every detail to match. Night, gun, shock, heart piercing bullet.

Every other day, Ms. Mercy went out of the house for a long time. Mr. Mercy stayed behind. Farm work, TV; more often than not, TV at the expense of farm work.

He was very casual for a man who killed a teenager for 'trespassing'.

When he bothered to work, all he did was pant, moan, and bitch. But when he was complaining, he got energy: stomping, yelling, cursing.

Sometimes, Ms. Mercy would be with him. She asked again and again to change the show.

"Is this the time to watch this?"

"I love it" Mr. Mercy said. "Gives me hope."

"Hope for what?"

"...Something."

She would walk away quietly.

There's one scene he loved to watch. Again and again. Some stupid son getting leukemia, his dad with him till the end, roll credits.

If that boy had been on his farm, he would have died of bullets long before leukemia got to him.

"Gonna have to sell this TV. This stand, couch. Everything," I heard him say with a giggle. "Never thought about moving out at 72."

Today Mr. and Ms. Mercy went out. Late, very late. They left as the sun set.

Their side door was never locked. I wandered inside.

Where did he put his shotgun?

Sure, I could have bought a pistol for this. But I wanted Mr. Mercy to feel the lead in his heart. Feel his heart bumping, bleeding out.

There, at the mantle.

I hid in the TV room.

A door opened. Light footsteps. Approaching the living room. I couldn't get a good look, but I could hear him.

He stopped by the sofa, sighed, and opened the TV. He played that damn scene again.

He started to cry. Again. Not even a full second in.

It must be him. What a dope.

Yet, something was off. His footsteps. Quiet. Maybe, I should take a closer look.

Joe could have lived if Mr. Mercy took a closer look.

I can hear him moan and cry.

Same pattern as always.

Close enough.

I aimed and fired.

Bang.

I sprinted at him, wanting to see his eyes go dark.

Except, he was thinner. Too thin. Shorter too. In a brand-new funeral dress.

It was Ms. Mercy. She was holding an urn.

I just stared and stared, heat leaving my spine.

I did not want to look at what was inside that urn.

15 minutes left, and so far it’s just you two.
Would you like for me to extend the deadline, so that there might be more stories to compete against?

I'm late by two seconds it's over

>>25387757
I'd prefer to extend it. How about a full week?

Sure thing!
(At any rate, I know I’ll have something to contribute.)
And your reply came right in time—I was just about to post the poll.

>I'm late by two seconds it's over
Even if it I wasn’t extending it, you’d still have been fine.

By the way, I’m fine with >>25387481 not using Rentry, since the submission fits inside a textbox, but I’m pretty sure you did your trip wrong.

And not that you need my permission to do so, but I’m fine with /lwc/ being shared across boards—if you think there are creative folks out there who would be interested in participating in this, please let ’em know!
