What's your favorite Joseph Conrad story? It could be a novel, novella, short story, etc. Please don't include spoilers.
Ive seen Apocalypse Now and from what I know it's based on Heart of DarknessI haven't read it tho
>>25381931Nostromo might be my favourite book.
I don't think there's any topping "Heart of Darkness". It's short, beautifully written and hits like a bag of bricks in the chest. It's among like three other books that i was forced to read i highschool that i remember fondly. I'm reading "Lord Jim" now, its ok but it just that have that "It" that "Heart of Darkness" has.
>>25381931I want to read more of his work but my favorite so far is The Secret Sharer it's very appropriately stuck with me. Heart of Darkness was also the only novel to get me to laugh.
I've always loved The Duel
Lord Jim, Heart of Darkness or the Secret Agent, can't decide.
>>25381931I’ve only read Heart of Darknrss but I’ve just ordered a book of four of his short stories. Heart of Darkness is worth reading. It’s short, very atmospheric and contains a good deal of personal feeling from Conrad himself, who was something of an explorer.
>>25381931Absalom, Absalom!
>>25382072I actually think that Heart of Darkness was amazing but he wrote another half dozen just as amazing stories, and HoD isn't that special. For me it's Nostromo, Typhoon, Endbof the Tether and the Secret Agent.
I read some collection that included a few of his stories and Heart of Darkness didn't really stand out as especially good desu. I was drunk when I read that part though.
>>25381931Youth is pretty fucking compelling. It's set aboard a coal haulier. Half-way across the Indian Ocean, the crew realise the coal is on fire. They are days away from land. The story is autobiographical.
The Nigger of the Narcissus is my favorite story by him. The Duel is also very good
Nostromo. Some others I really like and haven't seen mentioned yet are Under Western Eyes and The Secret Sharer
The duel and heart of darkness the short story with the haunted ship was pretty quaint as well
I had this as a based kid
Nostromo and The Secret Agent are two of the best political novels ever written, and in their own ways both still feel immediate and relevant after 100+ years.
>>25381931Conrad sux
>>25381943It's pretty good. You can read it in half a day. Lots of sailor jargon though
>>25386980Do you think Nostromo is worth adding to one’s library if one cares for “good books?”
>>25381931Victory for the loveNostromo for the valiant hubris and beauty.
>>25389821What?
