America is the only Western nation in which cultural evolution is still possible. The existence of all sorts of new cults and religions spawned in America demonstrates this. In Europe we have had no religious evolution since Luther, except insofar as you can call a general societal apathy towards religion an evolution. Even in Canada you don't see this happening. It's only in the still evolving spirit of America that you see things like Mormonism, Jehovas Witnesses, the Amish, Pentecostalism, Scientology. That alone makes the US fascinating tk me as a European.

On the other hand, Americans are kind of idiots. Like how is it possible to elect a president as corrupt, depraved, demented, and insane as Donald Trump twice? When I think about this my previous admiration of Americans vanishes
>>
>Today is America’s 250th birthday
Is it though? March 4th was the birth of the current nation-state, September 3th is when we got our independence, July 2nd is when we resolved to formally ask for it, July 8th was the first public declaration of our independence, and the first official publication of our declaration of our independence was August 2nd. Genuinely all of those have a better case for being our birthday, in descending order, than July 4th.

The contemporary European psyche was shaped by the failure of visionary ideologies, notably fascism and communism, but also the decline of the liberal world order as well. It creates a sense of great cautiousness among the European people. Even someone like Žižek, one of Europe's biggest philosophers now, promotes a kind of 'conservative communism' where he emphasizes restraint in the ambitiousness of ideological projects while also calling for a sweeping overthrow of the system. That's symptomatic of Europe as a whole.

Americans never suffered a fascist or communist regime on their home soil and have never had to deal with the process of being under a doomed ideology that everyone can see is falling apart but which is being artificially propped up by the elite (until now, that is). The Americans can therefore be more ambitious and intellectually unrestrained because they don't see the worst possible outcome as the most likely.

In my estimation, Europe is slowly getting over this cautiousness. European history is a history of feverish levels of ideological obsession, be it the crusades, the reformation, the Enlightenment. This apathetic spirit cannot last forever.

>how is it possible to elect a president as corrupt, depraved, demented, and insane as Donald Trump twice
because his opponents were even more corrupt and insane, whereas trumps corruption and insanity can at least be compared to the corruption and insanity familiar to the average man. trump is not xi jinping but he is also not joe biden

No one knows the exact date Jesus was born, and he was more likely born in the Summer rather than Winter, but everyone still celebrates it on December 25. It's called tradition, it follows cultural significance, not what makes the most logical sense.

>In Europe we have had no religious evolution since Luther
The Enlightenment was probably the biggest religious evolution in human history. Europe went from a continent of religious fanatics to religious skeptics. Religious freedom, deism, secularism, and even atheism. You make it seem like a minor thing, but much of this was unheard of for humankind until then. If you want to talk about religions, then the only religious evolution I can think of is Vatican II and the birth of neopagan movements. Neopaganism is quite small and there is a lot of LARP as they have no tradition and it's very difficult forming a new religion in a modern, scientific world. But it's still a religious evolution nonetheless.

>Like how is it possible to elect a president as corrupt, depraved, demented, and insane as Donald Trump twice
Donald Trump is incredibly charismatic and was already globally recognized before 2016. Because of that, in election times he made himself seem like he was different from the other candidates. Also he uses the internet a lot. He posted memes, constantly uses social media, and appeared on podcasts and live streams; which in a 21st century world increases his outreach.

Delusional. Show me another president on this level of corruption.
>President Trump reaped a stunning windfall in his first year back in the White House, including about $1.4 billion from his family’s cryptocurrency businesses, a new filing shows.

>All told, the president pulled in at least $2.2 billion, a figure that includes other parts of his vast holdings, such as his real estate assets. That compares to a minimum of $622 million his enterprises pulled in for all of 2024, before he returned to the presidency.

>One of his biggest hauls in 2025 came when an investment firm tied to the United Arab Emirates bought nearly half of the Trump family’s main crypto company, World Liberty Financial, a transaction that blurred the line between foreign policy and private enterprise.

>In January 2025, days before Mr. Trump’s inauguration, an investment firm tied to the government of the U.A.E. bought a 49 percent stake in World Liberty, raising a slew of ethical concerns. Soon the Emiratis struck a deal with the Trump administration — over the objections of some national security officials — for the export of valuable computer chips that power artificial intelligence.

>The other major source of Mr. Trump’s crypto wealth was his memecoin, a novelty currency known as $TRUMP that he started selling days before his inauguration. He earned more than $600 million from sales of the coin, according to the filing.

I would argue the most corrupt thing a leader has ever done is bankrupt his own country to lose a war for global domination in service to his own ego

And while you could say that applies to trump. He's not the leader I have in mind

I know Plath, Leguinn, and Hooks are antithetical to your chud values but they're genuinely worth reading.

Bukowski, Hemingway, and Dick as well, among others

Also, no Poe? For shame!
>>
>>25384590
>plath, le guin
Lmao. Both steaming piles of shit. Dickinson is already there.

Hemingway is already there. Bukowski sucks. Dick? Lol

Poe is influential but his work isn't artistically great. He came at the right moment and really worked the imagination of the writers to come. He can be hon mention with no recommended works.

Even mutts themselves didn't care about the 250th birthday. Looks at the embarassement of a party that was in every US big city. Look at polls consistently reporting only a quarter of mutts feel any pride in the US, and those are all boomers when you break it down by age. They were number 2 most disliked country in teh world in 2024 and are fast tracking to beat China at that game.

Americans don't have a new religion. Their religion is money. The Pentecostals believe (or have forced themselves to believe via seizure induced brain damage caused by their nonsensical rituals) that the sign of God's favour is having a lot of money. That's why these Pentecostal preachers live in big mansions with private jets while their gullible flock fund their lifestyle in the hopes that God will similarly reward them. The Mormons are somewhat better but their society is essentially the perfect instantiation of How to Win Friends and Influence People. In contravention of their rebellious, polygamous origins the Mormons became perfect suit-and-tie wearing avatars of the ideal of the American businessman. There is nothing in the American ideal that transcends the monetary, and there never was. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is only a coded way of saying, money, money, and the pursuit of money.

The formal vote was the adoption. The official document with the final language wasn't published until August 2. July 4 was the ratification.
>>
>>25385372
The July 4 version of the Declaration of Independence is the approved document that was sent to printers, while the August 2 version is the engrossed copy that was signed by delegates. The July 4 version contains the text as adopted by Congress, whereas the August 2 version is a formalized and signed document, which included the names of the signatories.
