>>25384990It's a good book, but when I first learned about the actual 3 body problem, it wasn't through this book, so when I talk about the problem, everyone only references this book which is annoying as fuck.I'd recommend giving it a read because it's like a Chinese version of Hail Mary in its approach to blending space science and storytelling.
>>25384990It's subtle chinese propaganda.
>>25384990I know a few people not big into sci-fi who have bounced off it. It does have a slow start. Book 2 is one of the best sci-fi books I've read.
>>25384990The prose is abyssal;the storytelling competent, the plot is interesting.Cool story, but no literary value whatsoever; looking back at it, I would have enjoyed it all the same is someone just recapped the entire string of events to me.
>>25384990NoRead the prologue and Google the dark forest theory
no.
>>25384990almost certainly noteven if you're really into the real things the series is about (chinese-western relations, esoteric writing) you're going to have trouble seeing those because you're going to miss all liu's references to other sci-fi works and the way he's using them
>>25385422>chinese-western relations, esoteric writingwell i'm very interested in these, so maybe i'll give it a go anyway. thanks anon.
If you're not into scifi, then no. I blasted through it, and really enjoyed the dark forest.
>>25384990Its absolutely only worth it if you're into sci fi. The characters and dialogue and major plot points are really bad. Its all about the ideas and the problem of dealing with the aliens.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE sci-fi. I study cosmology, Fermi Paradox, deep space, all that, to an extreme autistic level. Like it's bad. I have every space movie ever made on a hard drive, including non-English ones. So believe me when I say this...I couldn't even finish it. I got about 1/3 into the first book and just quit. I couldn't. First it's not well written or not well translated or something. Second all the names are SUPER CHINESE. Like every one is named Kim or Dim or some shit. I couldn't tell the characters apart because they all had the same name. Seriously. It was pretty boring, not realistic, not exciting, and it was HEAVY with communist philosophy on every other page. Like immersion breaking bullshit type stuff. I even love novels with political ideas, but this was just like a CCP die hard wrote it to get their social credit score maxed or something. It was very obvious and very gross. I've watched some Chinese movies that were like this, also about space, and it's got to have a state mandated percentage of pro communism messaging or I guess it can't be made. I recommend you read Ark & Flood by Baxter for a great intro into Hard Science Fiction which is my favorite genre of literature. >>25385252It's not subtle, at all!
>>25385332I read the Wikipedia plot summary and have no desire to read the actual book. One of the rare times that has happened.
>>25384990It's a bad story with absolutely awful "science"
>>25384990It's not very good. I suspect the rave reviews about it in popular culture were down to a certain modern orientalism, dreaming, at the time of its release, of some incredible untapped well of science fiction to be found in China awaiting discovery by the west, dismissing any faults as owing to a clunky translation. In the years since people have calmed down on that front, and now it's more or less a mainstream opinion to dislike it.
>>25384990>I'm not into sci-fiAre you trying to get into it, or have you tried already and have a long track record of not liking other people's recommendations?Do you HATE sci-fi? is there any sci-fi you do or maybe WOULD like?
>>25385252So how exactly is the entire part about the main character suffering because of how terrible the cultural revolution was and made her want to destroy the world chinese propaganda?
>>25384990The series is good.
>>25384990honestly tragic how some anons will just shit on something when given the slightest opportunity to do so even if it doesn't answer the OP's question>Is it worth it even though I'm not into sci-fi?it depends if you think you can get into sci-fi. imo, 3body-problem is hard sci-fi. maybe that statement ruffles some feathers among some neckbeards, but i dont give a fuck. the concepts he imagines are big, the whole series is big and ambitious, and he does not spare the reader of some technical descriptions every now and then (especially in the first book, i believe). if this doesn't filter you, and especially if you find it cool, you are likely to find the books great. it's almost archetypal sci-fi as far as a book (series) goes. enjoy anon!
>>25386365>First it's not well written or not well translated or something.disagree, it reads well. the translation itself neither of us cant comment on. >Second all the names are SUPER CHINESE. Like every one is named Kim or Dim or some shit.this is not the writer's problem, but yours, you're just a fucking idiot>Seriously. It was pretty boring, not realistic, not exciting, it was sufficiently realistic and exciting to challenge you and be fun. it may be that you are too retarded to get it>and it was HEAVY with communist philosophy on every other page.book starts taking place in 20th century china and has communism embedded into its plot, im literally losing my mind, such bullshit. and it isn't even the case that all communist officials in the book are portrayed as some kind of übermenschen>I've watched some Chinese movies that were like this, also about space, and it's got to have a state mandated percentage of pro communism messaging or I guess it can't be made. unlike our precious western media where the main cast of every (rebooted) piece of sci-fi entertainment needs to be a disabled black lesbian or else it doesn't get funding. honestly the communist propaganda is literally a breath of fresh air in comparison
>>25388906>deifies scientific elites and technological progress >creates a false dichotomy between morality and the survival of the human race>interstellar empires are real, best way to survive is to make yourself as inconspicuous as possible
>>25390272> deifies scientific elites and technological progress standard sci-fi trope> creates a false dichotomy between morality and the survival of the human racestandard sci-fi trope> interstellar empires are real, best way to survive is to make yourself as inconspicuous as possiblethe dark forest was an original concept the author came up with it due to working at a state-owned industry where everyone was in fear of being fired and everyone wanted others to be fired first. so in what galaxy is that positive propaganda?
>>25390272The last book reveals that the best way to survive the hostile universe is ____________love___________
>>25384990Its a really funny book if you understand how slant humor is like british humor but ten times as dry. Its even funnier that a lot of booktubers take it so seriously as to consider it cosmic horror because they've never talked to someone from asia before to know what cheeky motherfuckers they are.
>>25384990I read the summary on wikipedia, and it sounds like a ripoff of old scifis like Foundation and others.
first book is kinotwo others are just too much
