I LOVE LOVE LOVE sci-fi. I study cosmology, Fermi Paradox, deep space, all that, to an extreme autistic level. Like it's bad. I have every space movie ever made on a hard drive, including non-English ones. So believe me when I say this...I couldn't even finish it. I got about 1/3 into the first book and just quit. I couldn't. First it's not well written or not well translated or something. Second all the names are SUPER CHINESE. Like every one is named Kim or Dim or some shit. I couldn't tell the characters apart because they all had the same name. Seriously. It was pretty boring, not realistic, not exciting, and it was HEAVY with communist philosophy on every other page. Like immersion breaking bullshit type stuff. I even love novels with political ideas, but this was just like a CCP die hard wrote it to get their social credit score maxed or something. It was very obvious and very gross. I've watched some Chinese movies that were like this, also about space, and it's got to have a state mandated percentage of pro communism messaging or I guess it can't be made. I recommend you read Ark & Flood by Baxter for a great intro into Hard Science Fiction which is my favorite genre of literature. >>25385252It's not subtle, at all!

I suspect the rave reviews about it in popular culture were down to a certain modern orientalism, dreaming, at the time of its release, of some incredible untapped well of science fiction to be found in China awaiting discovery by the west, dismissing any faults as owing to a clunky translation.
