They're both important, but if I can only pick one, it's prose

ironically this pic is a good example. the style of the T doesnt simply add to the joke, it IS the joke.

Nice try, but that's not a rebuttal. My point is that your claim of style and content being inseparable in terms of that being a refuration of OP is stupid. And it is. A lame story told with immaculate prose is far less interesting than a compelling story told with acceptable prose.

>A lame story told with immaculate prose is far less interesting than a compelling story told with acceptable prose.
this assumes theres such a thing as a neutral proseless story. narrative is made up from language, and language devoid of narrative is gibberish. to start a discussion of prose vs plot without acknowledging the nuance of their contingency only encourages retarded perspectives on literature

if you don't want a story, then read poetry. but authors want to make money, so they slap together long-form doggerel and call it a book because they know they cannot make money otherwise

Bump. A thread that's actually about literature.

Sure, but I believe the obvious point OP is making is that the tendency of people around here to act like story is of lesser importance that fancy prose is stupid.
This thread is operating at a less nuanced level than you are looking at it from. But that's not a put down of the thread. In fact I'd say you were autistically overanalyzing the point.

Nah, that's like saying a bridge is made up of materials so we need really good materials to make a really good bridge. It helps, but most important is the design of the bridge, and the ideas behind the design of the bridge. Language is a vessel for the content, and it's an expression of the content, but it's not the content.

Universally that person's acumen is esteemed very little perceptive concerning whatsoever matters are being held as most profitably by mortals with sapience endowed to be studied who is ignorant of that which the most in doctrine erudite and certainly by reason of that in them high mind's ornament deserving of veneration constantly maintain when by general consent they affirm that other circumstances being equal by no exterior splendour is the prosperity of a nation more efficaciously asserted than by the measure of how far forward may have progressed the tribute of its solicitude for that proliferent continuance which of evils the original if it be absent when fortunately present constitutes the certain sign of omnipollent nature's incorrupted benefaction. For who is there who anything of some significance has apprehended but is conscious that that exterior splendour may be the surface of a downwardtending lutulent reality or on the contrary anyone so is there unilluminated as not to perceive that as no nature's boon can contend against the bounty of increase so it behoves every most just citizen to become the exhortator and admonisher of his semblables and to tremble lest what had in the past been by the nation excellently commenced might be in the future not with similar excellence accomplished if an inverecund habit shall have gradually traduced the honourable by ancestors transmitted customs to that thither of profundity that that one was audacious excessively who would have the hardihood to rise affirming that no more odious offence can for anyone be than to oblivious neglect to consign that evangel simultaneously command and promise which on all mortals with prophecy of abundance or with diminution's menace that exalted of reiteratedly procreating function ever irrevocably enjoined?

Eh, I would say prose is the design of the bridge too.

>Language is a vessel for the content, and it's an expression of the content, but it's not the content.
this belief has been unpopular in linguistics for a long time now. if language is only a vessel, how do we explain concepts that exist only because a language distinguishes them?

>Design is more important that materials
What a retarded statement. Your obese mother is not going to cross a wooden bridge, no matter how meticulously designed it is. Nothing less than carbon steel is going to carry her fat ass without collapsing.
>Language is a vessel for the content, and it's an expression of the content, but it's not the content.
This is also retarded. The way in which content is expressed is often more important than the content itself: a painting you wouldn’t look at twice in a doctor’s office could easily be regarded differently in a museum or gallery. Or more on point, a Wikipedia summary that conveys the same narrative details (content) of a book, is not the same as reading the actual book. Prose and plot are intertwined, because “how” you tell a story is inherently important to how the actual story unfolds and is perceived. A clinically written doctor’s note of your mother’s dietary habits may leave out pertinent details that a work of literary non-fiction would include, such as how the earth shakes when she walks, or how her chins wobble like gelatinous afterimages as she lurches around searching for the nearest Arby’s. The same information is conveyed in both cases: she is hopelessly fat and you are hopelessly retarded.

I won in the only way that matters. Your mom is still fat, by the way.
