Canadian redditor who's obsessed with women and probably suffers from agp writes an edgelord superhero world from the pov of a femcel who thinks and acts like a man, to the point the entire fambase assumes she's a lesbian. The worldbuilding is full of gigaliberal racism, like having a dragon man as the boss of the asian gang or the black member of the team being the son of a crack hoe and a guy who used to beat the shit out of him. the protag ends up getting blacked by him while rejecting two fat and nerdy white boys.
Btw, the world's most dangerous villain is Johnny Depp larping as the joker. Thinking about it now, by the end of the story all the characters that matter besides him and autistic batman are women.

The author, like so many people who make the mistake of interacting with their fans, obviously changes things based on their reactions. This leads to things like the sequel to Worm having entire chapters were the characters do nothing except discuss their boundaries and feelings, or in Twig where he kills off a character who's gay for the MC, then brings them back as a clone who becomes trans in order to date the MC

I still like it, but it's funny to think about how much the author's neurosis influenced the story. The sad thing is that his posterior works suffered much more from it.
Hell, even the fact the worm will perpetually rot as a webnovel despite how popular it could be is fruit of his way of thinking.
>>
Legit think if he'd played his cards right it could've been Worm instead of Invincible that got adapted. He was in the right place and right time, but did nothing right after finding online success. Didn't even manage to get it trad published.
>>
>>25391584
unlikely, invincible was already a comic by the guy that did the walking dead.
>>
>>25391584
>but did nothing right after finding online success.
He actually straight up denied any adaption for his works. "Apparently" the dude was offered to get his book adapted by multiple different studios, but outright rejected them. I don't know how credible is that, but it is true that the author really dislikes his work being edited in any shape or form.
Gotta give him props to dislike his works being edited.

As somebody who's also trying to break into the world of web novels (or at least trying to start things off with a web novel, maybe expanding into physical books later), Wildbow's autism is just too much for me. Like, I am autistic, but not THAT autistic. If multiple high-level people in the entertainment industry offer to at least take a stab at your work you've gotta say yes. Sure, they may butcher it, but in the process they'll get you more exposure than you could possibly imagine, could have possibly dreamed of when you were just posting to Spacebattles or 4chan.

And if they DO butcher it you can pull a George R.R. Martin and say, "My version is better, guys, check it out!", and you STILL get way more readers than you would have before. It's basically a win/win, whether the people who want to adapt your work do a good job or not. Assuming you can work the media like GRRM, at least.

I've read a lot of webfiction after I discovered Worm way back then, but reflecting on it now it really is the peak of the medium. The ending is perfect, the characters are impactful, and there are no loose ends. The rest doesn't come close, to be honest.

What really set it apart even from what people call great genre fiction for me is the ending. One of the only satisfying ones I've ever read in a story of this type (really long, world/character focused hero journey thing). It ties everything together and elevates the middling and sometimes cringy ingredients into something quite good.

>Gotta give him props to dislike his works being edited.
He doesn't deserve props for being a total sperg. I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt in the years after Worm when he first talked about insane studio execs wanting to change everything, but after the whole Ward debacle I'm pretty much convinced that everything he said back then was a severe exaggeration at best. The guy can't take criticism in any way, and defaults to digging his heels in and shutting down when people have a problem with his writing.

Does it hold up and is it worth reading if you are a man in his 30s? I tried giving this a try over a decade ago but I listened to some amateur audiobook rendition and it ruined it for me.

What did she do that was so bad? Be cute and white?
>>
>>25397775
>What did she do that was so bad?
She mindraped her step sister. Meaning she brainwashed her into liking her back. There are lots of theories on why she liked her sister, but talking about it makes fans really divisive to the point where the discussion ALWAYS goes into a loop. The author straight up loathed her because she always caused fans to make autistic debates about her, even if it was for her. In the sequel she gets worse and worse to the point its pretty clear that the author hates her and wrote her into a spiral, she becomes insanely fucked up. It's probably also one of the reasons why the author became so sensitive into people criticizing his writing. Especially in Worm/Ward. Redditors hate her too. She was honestly justified in her actions, but people dismiss them automatically and label her. You either hate her or defend her. No in between.
tl;dr She's a femcel.
>>
>>25397789
Forgot to add she later mutilates her step sister and made her into a love-blob monster because her obsession with her was too strong. Cures her later but she is still hated by literally everyone and her family. NO one defends her on what she did in the story.
She's cute at least too.

Ctrl+F in the comments: "I wondered if anyone would pay any attention to that."

Then, several years later, the sneaky faggot subtly edited his own AND other users' posts, to pretend this never happened:
https://imgur.com/a/1hyzSyA

Here's also a screenshot in this post. Back in 2013, Wilbow didn't deny the aura theory, and was only happy to bring it up himself:
https://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/why-isnt-ward-as-popular-as-worm.1122893/page-65#post-109719221
"Amy realized she had feelings for Victoria. She bottled them up. Readers have speculated that Glory Girl's 'awe' aura might have had long term effects on the emotionally vulnerable Amy, helping this along (or making it happen)."

Then, during the writing of Ward, Wildbow, being a flip-flopping retconning retard, decided to backtrack and do something retarded instead, making Amy's character jarringly inconsistent between the two books.
>>
>>25397895
>Wildbow, being a flip-flopping retconning retard, decided to backtrack and do something retarded instead

It's not even the first time he demonstratively spitefully takes a shit on his own fanbase, just out of pure spite and malice, whenever he feels he can:

He added and canonized the existence of some fucking Youth Guard during the so-called PRT Quest on spacebattles, just to make life harder to the players, because they were successfully resisting his direction into the grimderp.

He retconned Browbeat into dying, because fans started to speculate whether Browbeat was Moose in the Ward's comments.

He revealed Mlekk (a very episodic character, whom fans nonetheless liked) to be the very asshole that fans hated, because fans apparently were making a mlekk joke in the comments way too often.

He made Rune's actual name to be Tammi (very very late in the Ward), despite being aware that the fanfiction authors have been calling her Cassie for years. (Really, would it have killed him to pet the fanbase?)

etc.
>>

Amy only became controversial because of Wildbow's autism lmao. He retconned her into a rapist and all around monster for no reason other than making Victoria look better. Then called his readers rape apologists when they pointed out that he retconned her entire character. Like 90% of Ward is just Wildbow making really stupid decisions then doubling down when the readers didn't like it.
>>
>>25397789
note that in the scene where this initially happens, she explicitly tells victoria not to touch her, twice, which victoria of course ignores.
when the recently traumatized girl with an extremely dangerous touch-based ability says this, you listen. it was always victoria's fault even without taking any aura mindfuckery into account.
the core problem with ward is that victoria was always a bad person, and in ward the world contorts itself to make her right anyway.
>>
>>25398230
Well, there's a reason why aside from the initial success of Worm, very few care about anything else that Wildbow wrote.

It's one thing to challenge your audience, it's quite another to just keep bitchslapping it for fun.
>>
I dropped reading Worm way back when sometime after the Slaughterhouse 9000 and all the chapters of Scion just destroying everything since the scale got so crazy by that point while simultaneously feeling like things and characters mattered less than ever. I really liked the Undersiders dynamics but when the story shifted from that it really lost my interest. Is it worth ever finishing this and reading Ward to see how bad the rest got?

Even aside from the rape that Wildbow added in, Amy has an entire redemption arc that got retconned in Ward because Victoria needs to have enemies that are completely unequivocally evil because Wildbow was terrified of people disliking Victoria. It was a meant to be symbolic.

In the months leading up to the wretch Wildbow discussed his thoughts on rape frequently, claiming he wouldn't include rape in Worm because he didn't think he could get it right. In the past pre-Ward days when giving content warnings for or recommending Worm, he said there was no rape.

Then Ward comes out and suddenly it was totally actual rape all along.

>Literally the only way I know about worm is because people keep adding sections in cyoa pictures including it.
As for me, I know about it mostly via osmosis through fanfiction.

Although fanfic quality leaves a lot to be desired. The only Worm fanfic I enjoyed was Dysfunctional, but it is technically a double crossover with Youjo Senki and Fate.
