Is it possible to read too much? How much reading could be considered too much reading?

>Is it possible to read too much?
just like with entertainment and all things in general sobriety is key, you can always do too much of anything
for reading specifically see Don Quixote as an example
>How much reading could be considered too much reading?
there's no clear defined cutoff point but generally speaking if some activity prevents you from doing other things that you should be doing then you are past that point already, and this point changes from person to person

I think there mostly isnt, provided you voluntarily chose the hermit-like existence that excessive reading entails, and find some peace in it.

but if you dont actively choose that life, excessive reading can slowly become a substitute for living. You've read about love but have never loved. You've read about the world but have never seen it. And you end up a bland husk of a human being that reads about life as if looking at it through a window.

If you can't find the time for exercise, sleep, carousing and fucking, you're reading too much.

If I read enough novels back to back, I do get the urge to decompress with a movie or video game

Memes are fun. Welcome to 4chan.

Not "too many" but you can accidentally fuck yourself over depending on what you read most

If you only read very good books, or groundbreaking books, or books with a strong message, then it becomes very hard or even impossible to "lower your standards"

And I don't mean it at all in a snobbish way, because you can miss out on genuinely good stuff, outsider art and fun pulpy entertainment and weird, weird writing, just because your calibrations are all out of whack

So when reading you should mix it up as much as possible, literary fic and nonfic and genre fic.

The issue is there's a low number of books you could get to read in a year or in a lifetime. How much are you averaging out? a 120 per year? That's a tiny blip on the amount of books one could get interested and curious about, let alone what's been written and published in the last 3 centuries. You've gotta be picky because you only have so much time.

I spent my twenties:
>abusing caffeine & having an insanely fucked up sleep schedule
>reading (a LOT, sometimes up to 8 hours a night)
>shitposting on FB & 4chan (a LOT)
>partying
>general degenerate NEETdom
I think in that sense you could say I was reading too much, as in I was reading and fucking around instead of having a living and starting a family.
>>
>>25398675
Reading without writing is just as bad as consuming entertainment
>>
>>25398675
if i read too much i start to feel depressed and hollow and overly introspective
>>
>>25398675
Yup.
If you want to write something of quality it's better to know 5 books or authors in and out rather than read 599 books shallowly.

What if you really don't have much to say in your writing? or did you mean it in the sense of using your writing to further reflect and expand on your thoughts and feelings on any given subject?
>>25399542
that's the kind of shit stunted people would say as an excuse for their lack of curiosity. literature doesn't work that way.
>>
>>25400730
/lit/erally all you need are the complete works of Homer, Plato, Aristotle, Montaigne, and Shakespeare. Do you realize the sheer breadth of material that covers? What do you mean, 'lack of curiosity'?
>>
>>25398843
It's monotonous as fuck and not in an interesting way. Don't bother.

Reading too much will draw you into the Shadow Realm. It's true.

>How much reading could be considered too much reading?
When you start to think that books are real, forgetting that anyone can write a book and that all of it is no less likely to be bullshit than what you'd hear from your local drunk on a bender outside the nearest pub.
