Why does this kino work so well?Even if you didn't like it, it absolutely earned its pulitzer
Hit all the right buttons for all the right western tropes has a little of everything really violence rape humor cowboys Indians adventure western genre peaked here
>>25399129Is it actually good and respectable historical novel (like Egyptian Sinuhe) or is it just fun adventure novel (like Shogun for example)? Or rather: which of these three is it closes to - Blood Meridian, Red Dead Redemption, Vinnetou.
>>25400105It's a fun historical novel on the border between popular and literary. It's almost exactly the male equivalent of Gone With The Wind.
>>25400134Thanks for reminding me of that one, planned to read it too.
>>25400105Are you talking about the ancient myth or the novel by a Finn?
>>25400184The post is about historical novels, so what do you think, am I talking about perhaps the most famous historical novel by one of the most celebrated writers of historical novels Mika Waltari ("a finn" as you say - kys) or the ancient egyptian fake autobiography it's based on? I know americans were deemed too stupid for the book so they only got abridged version for dummies but come on.
FWIW my ex asked to read it and really liked it. She barely read anything except cookbooks.
>>25399129Genuine kino
>>25400105Is "Shogun" a good follow-up book to deal with the kino hangover from "Lonesome Dove"?
>>25401825yes, Shogun is also kino. Lonesome Dove is one of my favorite books I've ever read
>>25401825Shogun is fun adventure, I would compare it to Indiana Jones. It's not historically accurate or historically authentic at all. Not even culturally accurate but the fetishistic caricature-esque japanese culture in the book makes it fun.The show sucks.
McMurtry was best know for his novels about modern-day Texas (Hud, The Last Picture Show, Terms of Endearment) and wanted his follow Texas writers to do the same. -- They didn't so he decided to write the definitive Western to put a stop to it. (Then, of course, he started writing sequels, so there's that.)
I bought this book to read to my 95yo Texan grandfather. He passed before I could read it to him. Now it's on my list.
>>25402388McMurtry seemed like a chore of a person to know IRL despite his books being good
Just finished it, good times. How do you guys feel about the rest of the series, should continue on?
>>25402638piggy backing off this anon, is this the first in the series? also interested to know if it stands alone or if the whole series is required reading
>>25402794Dead Man's Walk and Comanche Moon are prequels. Streets of Laredo is the only sequel.
>>25402992are they good
>>25403405Streets of Laredo is Larey's favorite for some reason. The brutality gets upped.Lonesome Dove has such a palpable sense of danger you feel like these characters can be genuinely wiped out at a moment's notice. Laredo continues that and delivers. The other two are fun if you like the old characters and want to see them in their prime
>>25403481i think i would like that anon, thanks
>>25402064>>25402069Good to know. Thanks, anon. I'm actually starting LD soon and wanted something to have lined up when I'm done. LD is one of the few books that is widely considered great. I'm excited.
>>25403481should i read the series chronologicaly or by publishing date?
>>25403915Published date is recommended
>>25403915Publishing date. Lonesome Dove is really the fulcrum of all 4 stories
So I just finished Lonesome Dove I wanted to savor it for a bit and not rush into the rest of the series, so I started reading his other book The Last Picture Show and I'm halfway through and not sure how I feel. Tell me what I'm supposed to be thinking anons
