I'm curious about the expansion of the "gym" and "going to the gym" as a redemptive sort of thing. Like it seems like gyms were pretty niche before the internet. Most people, it seemed, went because they needed to after being given orders by doctors or because they needed to for another hobby / their career. Going to the gym as a hobby in itself and bodybuilding culture was pretty niche. But at some point, the gym became a redemptive and transformative place. Like it's impossible to receive tough love advice without "you have to go the gym and lift weights" being thrown into the mix. It's not bad advice but I don't think lifting or the gym in general had this sort of reputation as a redemptive crucible for all of life's failures and misfortunes until recently. Anyone who is down and out for any reason is told they need to go to the gym. I actually like going to the gym but I don't think it has fixed any of the deeper problems in my life.
