>>25400377Good book, but it is a doctoral thesis so a bit hard to get through at times. I'll provide a summary to get things started. He essentially argues that the birth of philsophy required the creation of an aristocracy. The aristocracy was founded in greece, india, china, modern day rwanda, and so on, by invaders that were pastoralists. Due to them protecting livestock they had developed a warrior culture to defend their cattle, their diet of milk and meat hade made them stronger than other groups. While roaming with their cattle they encountered other people, encountering other people made them culturally adaptable and started to distinguish between convention and nature, (nomos and phusis). So these warrior eventually conquered and established a racial caste system which had its own mythology but which was actually founded on natural differences. When the aristocracy eventually started collapsing the justification for the hierarchy that had been was defended by philosophers more explicitly in natural terms and the mythological precepts where essentially abandoned. Eventually this lead to Socrates defending Critias and his tyranny and subsequentially Socrates execution (see Leo Strauss). After which philosophers became more reluctant to speak openly about nature as it was seen as a justification of hierarchies and apologetic for tyranny. Essentially Costin Alamariu argues that in defending natural differences in human castes/hierarchies, philosophers began to discuss the difference between nature and nurture and that is what is supposed to have begun philosophy as a whole.
