I definitely turned my brain off for this one but I thought it was well written, it reminded me of why I loved the films and video games so much.

I'd recommend Conan by Robert E. Howard, since you said novels I'll specifically recommend Hour of the Dragon. Lengthier compared to other stories starring Conan but every scene is either an "action scene" or the prelude to one.

I remember years ago complaining how the Star Wars EU was so big and only getting bigger, how could get into it. Ended up regretting my words after the mouse bought the copyright.

I second Robert E Howard. I also remember enjoying Carl Hiassan, some Bill Bryson, and Patrick McManus though it's been a long time. John Muir is always fun.
